Passing target: 80% (16/20)
On a straight two-lane road with a broken yellow center line, you want to pass a slow truck. You can see an oncoming car far ahead. What must be true before you pull out to pass?
A follows a slow truck beside a broken yellow center line. A small oncoming car is far ahead; no clear-zone box, passing path or distance mark selects the answer.
Correct answer: The left lane is clear far enough to pass and get back well before the oncoming car.
Why
Before you pass, the left lane must be clearly visible and free of oncoming traffic for a distance long enough to complete the whole pass. Vermont law requires you to return to your lane before you come within 200 feet of an oncoming vehicle, and to move back only when you are safely clear of the vehicle that you passed. Signal left, check your mirrors and your left blind spot before you pull out, and signal right before you return. If you have any doubt about the distance, do not pass.
