You drive on an icy road, and the back of your car starts to slide to one side. What does the Vermont manual tell you to do?
The rear of blue car A slides sideways on an icy two-way road. A dark arrow beside its rear identifies the slide, with no steering-wheel setting or recovery path.
Correct answer: Keep off the brake and steer where you want the car to go, correcting as needed.
Why
Most skids start when the speed is too high for snow, ice, rain, gravel or wet leaves. Once a skid starts, the brakes make it worse, so control comes from steering toward your path. Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive help in snow but do not give good grip on ice. Practice in an empty, snowy parking lot to learn how your car handles.
