You parallel park so that your front bumper is 10 feet behind a fire hydrant. No sign or paint marks the curb. What is correct?
A is parked beside an unpainted curb near a fire hydrant. The card gives the existing bumper clearance as 10 ft, and the question has no legal-distance bracket.
Correct answer: You must move back until the bumper is at least 15 feet from the hydrant.
Why
Fire crews must connect hoses to a hydrant quickly, and a car near it can slow them when every second counts. West Virginia law (17C-13-3) lists places where you may not stop, stand or park, unless you must stop to avoid other traffic or to obey an officer or a traffic control. The 15-foot distance applies at all hours. Look for hydrants before you park, because the curb is not always painted.
