A storm has cut the power in your town. You come to an intersection where all the traffic lights are dark. No officer directs traffic. What should you do?
Four approaches meet under completely dark signal heads. A blue car, three silver cars and ordinary stop lines supply the intersection context; no officer is present.
Correct answer: Stop, and then go as if the intersection had a stop sign in each direction.
Why
A dark signal is easy to miss, and a crash can happen if one driver stops and the other does not. After the stop, the normal stop-sign rules apply: the driver who stopped first goes first, and at the same time the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. If a traffic officer directs traffic at the intersection, obey the officer.
