Passing target: 80% (52/65)
On a two-lane road with double solid yellow center lines, the car ahead of you goes 40 mph. The limit is 55 mph, and you can see far ahead with no oncoming traffic. What does Wisconsin law allow you to do?
A neutral close-up shows blue car A and double solid yellow center lines. The card states that silver car B travels at 40 mph in a 55 mph zone ahead, outside this close-up. No following gap or selected action is shown.
Correct answer: Stay behind it: the lines bar passing, and 40 mph is not below half the limit.
Why
Double solid yellow lines separate traffic that goes in opposite directions, and they tell drivers on both sides not to cross them to pass. Wisconsin has two narrow exceptions: you may cross to turn into a driveway when it is safe, and you may pass, with care, a vehicle that goes less than half the speed limit, unless it is farm equipment. A pass into the oncoming lane where the lines forbid it can cause a head-on crash.
