Passing target: 80% (52/65)
Your car starts to lose power on a rural two-lane highway. Just ahead is a sharp curve. Before the curve, there is a wide, flat shoulder. Where should you stop?
A is losing power while still in the travel lane. A sharp curve lies ahead and a wide flat shoulder lies before it.
Correct answer: On the wide shoulder before the curve, fully off the road, with your emergency flashers on.
Why
When the engine stops, hold the wheel firmly, because the steering becomes hard to turn, and move to the side of the road when it is safe. On a highway outside a business or residence district, Wisconsin law requires a stopped vehicle to be off the roadway when that is possible. It must leave at least 15 feet of open roadway and be visible from 500 feet in each direction. Turn on your emergency flashers, and call 911 if someone is hurt.
