It is snowing, and traffic is heavier than usual. You use the handbook's four-second rule and add time for each bad condition. What is the shortest following time that the rule gives?
Correct answer: 6 seconds, because you add one second for the snow and one for the heavy traffic.
Why
Snow reduces the grip of your tires, so the car needs more distance to stop. Heavy traffic gives more chances of sudden braking ahead of you. The handbook also asks for extra seconds when you follow large vehicles, motorcycles or bicycles, when you pull a trailer and when someone follows you too closely.

What should you do?You are first in line at a red light. The light turns green. What should you do before you drive into the intersection? The posted limit is 45 mph. Fresh snow covers the road, and some drivers are still going about 45 mph. What speed does Wisconsin law require of you?You drive on a street with houses on both sides, inside a Wisconsin city. You have seen no speed limit sign since you turned onto it, and no school is near. What is the highest speed that you may drive?
