Passing target: 80% (52/65)
At night on an unlit rural road, your low beams light only a short part of the road ahead. The posted limit is 55 mph, and an oncoming car is about 400 feet away. What should you do about your speed?
A drives east on an unlit rural road at night with low beams. The caption states the posted 55 mph limit and an oncoming car about 400 feet away outside the explicitly labeled close-up. No speed choice or stopping bracket is shown.
Correct answer: Drive at a speed that lets you stop within the distance your headlights light up.
Why
The handbook tells you to slow down whenever you cannot see 10 to 15 seconds ahead. High beams let you see about twice as far as low beams, so use them on dark roads when no one is near in front of you. At night it is also harder to judge the distance and speed of other traffic.
