Passing target: 80% (52/65)
In daylight, you drive on a hilly two-lane road with many curves. Because of the curves and the hilltops, you can see only about 4 to 5 seconds of road ahead of your car. The posted limit is 55 mph, and you drive at 50 mph behind another car. What should you do?
Daylight conceptual view of blue car A following silver car B on a two-lane road that bends left. A hatched area marks road outside A’s view beyond curves or hills. The card states 50 mph, the 55 mph limit and 4 to 5 seconds of visible road. No safe speed, following-time value or stopping bracket is drawn; lengths are explicitly not measured.
Correct answer: Slow down until you can control the car within the distance that you can see.
Why
Your look-ahead time tells you how much warning you have. At 50 mph, 4 to 5 seconds of view is a short distance, and a hazard past a curve can appear with little time to react. Wisconsin law requires a speed that lets you avoid a crash, even below the posted limit. When the road opens up again, move your eyes back out to 10 to 15 seconds ahead.
