Passing target: 80% (52/65)
The center marking of a two-lane road has two yellow lines. The line next to your lane is solid, and the line next to the oncoming lane is broken. A pickup ahead of you goes 45 mph in a 55 mph zone. What may you do?
A neutral close-up shows blue car A and a solid yellow line on A’s side and a broken yellow line on the far side. The card states that silver pickup B travels at 45 mph in a 55 mph zone ahead, outside this close-up. No following gap or selected action is shown.
Correct answer: Stay behind the pickup, because the solid line on your side bars you from passing.
Why
When the center marking is one solid and one broken yellow line, read the line on your side of the road. Broken on your side means that you may pass when it is safe; solid on your side means that you may not. The markings are set for the view ahead in each direction, so the two sides can have different rules at the same place.
