Driver A and Driver B drive the same model of car at 45 mph on the same dry road. Driver A watches the road ahead. Driver B looks down to change the radio station. A child runs into the road. Why does Driver B need more total distance to stop?
Two separate comparisons show the same model cars at 45 mph on the same dry road. A watches ahead; B looks down at the radio. A child appears at the same position in each comparison. No stopping bands or outcomes appear before answering.
Correct answer: B sees the child later, so B's car travels farther before the brakes are even applied.
Why
You cannot brake for a hazard that you have not seen yet. At 45 mph a car moves more than 60 feet each second, so a short look away adds a long distance before the brakes do any work. The handbook tells you to stay alert and look ahead, so that you can start to slow down early and stop gradually.
