Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course: Required Before Permit Test (2026)

informational·how to guide·

Where the Connecticut work zone course rules come from

The rules come from the Connecticut DMV knowledge and vision test page, the DMV news release of January 29, 2026 and Connecticut General Statutes Sec. 14-111r. Sec. 14-36, Sec. 14-37b and Sec. 14-212d, the DMV license suspension page, the Connecticut Driver's Manual (revised March 2023) and Public Act 26-120 supply the other details. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Connecticut DMV (portal.ct.gov/dmv) before you drive.

What is the Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course?

It is a free online course from the Connecticut DMV, and it takes less than an hour. It teaches what to do in a work zone and why work zone safety matters. Work zones have changing traffic patterns, reduced speed limits, narrow lanes and workers on the job.
By law (Sec. 14-111r), the program must show the dangers of highway work zones, include stories from highway workers and their families, cover the danger of vehicles on the highway shoulder and review how to act near emergency vehicles. It ends with a written or electronic test.

Who must take the Connecticut work zone course?

You are 16 or 17 and apply for a youth instruction permit
Yes. Since January 1, 2026, the law requires the course from every permit applicant. For youth permits issued on or after that date, the course is also a requirement for the license. The Connecticut youth learner permit guide has all the youth steps.
You are 18 or older and apply for an adult instruction permit
Yes. Every permit applicant needs the course, and you must have an adult instruction permit before you practice on public roads. If you never held a Connecticut license and have no valid license from another U.S. state, a U.S. territory or a country with a driver training agreement with Connecticut, the law asks for two certificates for the license: the work zone course and the 8-hour Safe Driving Practices course.
You were convicted of a violation of Sec. 14-283b or Sec. 14-212d (work zone offenses)
Yes, whatever your age. See the section on convictions below.

How to complete the course and use the certificate

  1. 1
Create an account with your legal name

Open the course from the Get Started link on the Connecticut DMV knowledge and vision test page, and sign up with your legal name.

  2. 2
    Finish the course

Plan for less than an hour. The course is free, and it ends with a test.

  3. 3
    Print your completion certificate

Print it before your appointment. The DMV asks for the printed copy.

  4. 4
Bring the certificate to your appointment

Give it to the DMV with your other required documents before the knowledge test. It is on the DMV list of items to bring.

  5. 5
Take the vision test and the knowledge test

Both tests are in person at the same appointment, and you take the vision test first. Bring the $40 (U.S. dollars) license exam fee.

Is there a work zone question on the knowledge test?

Yes. By law (Sec. 14-36), the Class D knowledge test must include a question about highway work zone safety and the driver's duties under Sec. 14-212d. The course does not replace the test. If you fail the knowledge test, you wait seven days and pay $40 to retake it. Try the free practice question on the work zone course rule first. Our practice tests and question pages are free and in English only.

What the DMV requires before the road test

  • Pass the vision test and the knowledge test.
  • Complete the free online Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course.
  • Hold your learner's permit for the required time.
  • Complete the required driver training.

What happens if you are convicted of a work zone offense?

Any driver convicted of a violation of Sec. 14-283b or Sec. 14-212d must complete the course. For these drivers, the DMV has the free online Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course for Drivers with Violations. If you finish it before your suspension starts, email the certificate to dmv.suspension@ct.gov. If you finish it on or after the suspension date, also pay a $175.00 reinstatement fee.
Until you go 36 consecutive months with no new moving violation, suspension violation or Sec. 14-283b violation, each new conviction for a specified moving violation, a suspension violation or a Sec. 14-283b violation brings a license suspension: 30 days for the first, 60 days for the second and 90 days for the third or later.

What counts as endangering a highway worker?

What counts as endangering a highway worker?
Rule under Sec. 14-212dWhat it means
Highway work zonePart of a state highway where construction, maintenance or utility work is done. Signs, channeling devices, barriers, pavement markings or work vehicles mark it.
SpeedDriving 15 mph or more over the posted limit in the work zone.
Traffic control devicesNot obeying the devices that direct traffic through the zone, except in an emergency, to avoid an obstacle or to protect another person.
Lane useDriving through or around the zone in a lane that is not marked for that traffic.
Workers presentOne or more highway workers must be in the work zone, near your act.
FineUp to $500 with no physical injury. Up to $1,000 if physical injury occurs. Other penalties can also apply.

How should you drive through a work zone?

Slow down, obey the posted speed limits and stay alert, because workers could be present. Follow the work zone warning signs and the flaggers, and expect lane shifts or lane closures to change from day to day. Keep a safe distance from barriers, trucks, equipment and workers, and increase your following distance. The practice question on what to do when a flagger signals you to stop tests this.
Since October 1, 2026, under Public Act 26-120, an activity that the distracted driving law bans is reckless driving when you do it while you drive in a highway work zone. The new Connecticut distracted driving law explains the phone rules.

Connecticut work zone course: common questions

Is the Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course free?

Yes. The DMV course is free and online, and it takes less than an hour. The $40 license exam fee that you bring to your vision and knowledge test appointment is a separate DMV fee. It is not a payment for the course.

Can I take the Connecticut work zone course in person?

The DMV course is online. The law also lets the DMV commissioner certify other organizations to give the program in person, through distance learning or both. Distance learning must have interactive parts, such as required participation or testing. A licensed drivers' school can apply for this certification.

Can I take the Connecticut knowledge test without the certificate?

No. The course completion certificate is on the DMV list of items to bring to the vision and knowledge test appointment. Print it before you go, and give the printed copy to the DMV with your other documents before the knowledge test starts.

Does the work zone course count toward the 8-hour course?

No. The law lists them as two separate certificates. A teen with a youth permit issued on or after January 1, 2026 needs both for the license. So does an adult with no earlier Connecticut license and no valid license from a U.S. state, a U.S. territory or a country with a driver training agreement with Connecticut. The 8-hour Safe Driving Practices course is a separate course.

Does a work zone conviction stay on my Connecticut driving record?

The course requirement does. After a conviction under Sec. 14-283b or Sec. 14-212d, the requirement and the date you completed the course go on your driving history record. The completion date stays there until you go 36 consecutive months with no new moving violation, suspension violation or Sec. 14-283b violation.
