Can You Take the Florida Permit Test in Spanish? Exam Language Rules

informational·how to guide·

Where these Florida exam language facts come from

The language rule, exam format, testing options and passenger rule come from the FLHSMV page on the Class E Knowledge Exam and Driving Skills Test. The FLHSMV General Information page repeats the language rule. The study guide and the older passenger text come from the Official Florida Driver License Handbook. The sign test comes from section 322.12 of the 2026 Florida Statutes. The document rules come from FLHSMV What to Bring and FAQ pages. These facts are correct as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (flhsmv.gov) before you drive.

The Florida knowledge exam is in English only

The 2026 FLHSMV exam page says: "Class E knowledge examinations are available in English only." The General Information page gives the same rule. The Class E Knowledge Exam is the written test that most people call the permit test, and you must pass it to get a learner's license.
The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions about Florida traffic laws, safe driving practices and identifying traffic controls. Florida law also says the Class E license examination includes a test of your ability to read and understand highway signs. Our free question on the number of questions on the Class E exam shows the English wording of a practice question.

Practice tests in Spanish or Haitian Creole: ask FLHSMV

We could not confirm a current FLHSMV practice test in Spanish or Haitian Creole. If you need study help in another language, ask FLHSMV. A practice test helps you learn the topics, but the exam that you take for your learner's license is in English. Learn the English words for road signs and traffic rules while you practice, because the exam uses them.

Three ways to take the same English-only exam

  • At a service center.
  • Online with an approved third party administrator, for any applicant under 18. The online test needs a Parent Proctoring Form that is notarized or signed in front of a driver license examiner.
  • Through DELAP, in many high school driver education classes.
  • Each way gives the same Class E Knowledge Exam. Read more in our guide to taking the Florida permit test online.

Can an interpreter ride along on the driving test?

The 2026 FLHSMV page says: "No other passengers are permitted during the exam." The older Official Florida Driver License Handbook gives the same rule with an exception when a language interpreter is necessary. The 2026 page is newer, so plan to take the driving test with no interpreter in the car. If you need language help, ask FLHSMV before the test day, and practice the common driving directions in English with a parent or a friend.

Documents for your application, and the Spanish link

For a REAL ID-compliant license, FLHSMV asks for original or certified, valid documents that are legally recognized by the state of Florida. Notarized documents are not accepted. A first-time applicant must give two forms of identification, proof of date of birth, proof of residential address and proof of Social Security number. A person who is not a U.S. citizen must also show proof of legal presence. The FLHSMV FAQ has an "En Español" link to its What to Bring list. Our Florida driver's license documents guide gives the full list.

How to study for an English-only exam

  1. 1
    Read the handbook

FLHSMV tells you to study the Official Florida Driver License Handbook.

  2. 2
    Use the study guide

The handbook has a Study Guide for Knowledge Exam, with answers at flhsmv.gov/handbooks-manuals.

  3. 3
Learn the exam topics in English

Focus on Florida traffic laws, safe driving practices and traffic controls, and learn the English words on road signs. Our free question on the subject areas of the exam shows the three areas.

  4. 4
    Take practice tests

Take the Class E Knowledge Practice Test that FLHSMV recommends. Our own practice tests are free and in English only.

  5. 5
    Know the other tests

For a learner's license, you also pass a vision and hearing test at a service center. The Class E Driving Skills Test comes later, for the Class E driver license.

Key takeaways
