Georgia Permit Test: How Many Questions and What You Need to Pass
How many questions are on the Georgia permit test, and how many must you get right?
The Georgia permit test (the DDS Knowledge Exam) has two tests, Road Rules and Road Signs, with 20 questions each. You must get at least 15 of 20 right on each test, so you can miss no more than 5 on each. You take it in person at a DDS Customer Service Center, with no appointment, at every center except Jackson.
Where the Georgia permit test facts come from
The two tests, the pass mark, the vision exam, the retest wait and the languages come from the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) page on tests and exams. The test-room rules and the topics come from the DDS Drivers Manual, and the permit fee from the DDS fees and terms page. The walk-in rule, the visit steps and the practice test come from the DDS license FAQs, learner's permit page and practice test page. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (dds.georgia.gov) before you drive.
Georgia permit test pass mark at a glance
| Part of the Knowledge Exam | What you need |
|---|---|
| Road Rules Test | At least 15 of 20 questions right |
| Road Signs Test | At least 15 of 20 questions right |
| Vision Exam (separate from the Knowledge Exam) | At least 20/60 vision in one eye, with or without corrective lenses, and a 140-degree field of vision |
How many questions can you miss on the Georgia permit test?
You can miss up to 5 of the 20 questions on each test, because you need 15 right. The pass mark applies to each test on its own, so a high Road Rules score does not make up for a low Road Signs score. Study the signs as carefully as the rules.

How to take the Georgia permit test step by step
- 1Study the manual
The questions come from topics in the DDS Drivers Manual. Read it and use the free DDS practice test.

DDS tests your vision on a machine at the center. You show your documents and pass the vision exam as part of the same visit.

Pay the $10 permit fee before the test begins. Then take the Road Rules Test and the Road Signs Test. You must pass both.
