Iowa Parent-Taught Driver's Ed: 30 Hours, Approved Courses and Steps

informational·how to guide·

Where the Iowa parent-taught facts come from

The rules for the student, the teaching parent, the 30 hours and the log come from Iowa Code 321.178A. The steps, the approved providers and the letter of completion come from the Iowa DOT parent-taught driver education page. The school course hours come from Iowa Code 321.178, the application rules from Iowa Administrative Code chapters 634 and 604, and the vehicle check from the Iowa DOT drive test page. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Iowa DOT (iowadot.gov) before you drive.

Who qualifies to teach and to learn

  • The student is 14 to 21 years old, is in the legal custody and control of the teaching parent, and has a valid instruction permit. The Iowa DOT also says the student must attend public school, attend an accredited nonpublic school, or receive homeschool education under Iowa Code chapter 299A.
  • The teaching parent is a parent, guardian or legal custodian of the student. The parent must meet the school attendance rule in Iowa Code 299.1.
  • The parent's license must be valid and must permit unaccompanied driving. A motorized bicycle license or a temporary restricted license does not count. The Iowa DOT page asks for a valid Iowa driver's license.
  • The parent's record must be clear for the previous two years. The law means no habitual-offender candidacy, no suspension, revocation or similar action, and no conviction for a moving violation that caused a crash.
  • Not every family member qualifies. The Iowa DOT does not recognize driver education from a person who is not a teaching parent.

Which courses are approved?

The Iowa DOT posts the list of approved courses on its website. As of 2026, the DOT parent-taught page names six providers: AAA How to Drive, Driver Ed in a Box, Driver Education 101, National Driver Training, NICC High School Driver's Ed and Safe2Drive. Course approval lasts one calendar year, so check the current list before you buy.
The course must teach the same content as a school course. That includes substance use disorder, distracted driving, railroad crossing safety, organ donation, and how to share the road with pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles. It does not need a physical classroom or a minimum number of classroom hours.

How many driving hours do you need?

The law requires 30 hours of street or highway driving. Three of those hours must be after sunset and before sunrise. The student drives with the teaching parent or with another person who is qualified to give street or highway driving instruction under the school course law.
The hours can also help later. Twenty of the 30 hours can count toward the supervised driving for the intermediate license. That license needs 20 supervised hours, with 2 at night. Test the rule with our free practice question on intermediate license hours.

What goes in the driving log

  • The date, with the month, day and year.
  • The specific driving skills that you covered in each session.
  • Notes on deficiencies and improvements during the lesson.
  • The time that the skill started and the time that it ended.
  • The total drive time for each row.
  • The number of night driving hours.
  • Check the totals yourself. The Road Ready app driving log may round up the time, and the parent must make sure that the log shows a full 30 hours with 3 at night.

Why logs get denied

The Iowa DOT says that most applications are denied because of missing or incomplete log entries. A denied application gets a letter of denial that gives the reason. Before you apply, review the log carefully and make sure that it looks like the sample completed log on the DOT page. You can keep the log on the Iowa DOT Driving Log, in the Parent's Supervised Driver Program Manual or in the Road Ready app.

How to apply and get the letter of completion

  1. 1
    Check that you qualify

The student needs a valid instruction permit and must attend school or receive homeschool education. The parent needs a valid license and a clear two-year record.

  2. 2
Choose and buy an approved course

Pick a provider from the DOT list and buy the course from the vendor. Finish the course and the 30 driving hours.

  3. 3
    Keep the driving log

Record each lesson, including the dates and times, and the 3 night hours.

  4. 4
    Submit the online application

After the course and the driving are done, the parent submits the online Application for Parent-Taught Driver Education to the Iowa DOT. Upload the student completion certificate or final grade report from the course provider, and a copy of the completed driving log.

  5. 5
    Wait for review

The Iowa DOT says an application may take 7 to 10 business days to process after it receives the application.

  6. 6
    Get the letter of completion

When the Iowa DOT approves the file, it emails the Parent-Taught Letter of Completion. You need this letter before you can schedule the driving test.

Is a DMV drive test required?

Yes. The letter of completion does not replace the driving test. The student must pass a driving test at an Iowa DMV before the student gets driving privileges.
Bring proof of insurance, because the DOT requires it for the driving test. Bring the student's valid instruction permit too. If the parent does not go to the driver's license site with the minor, the student needs a parental consent form. The vehicle must also pass an inspection that checks that it is safe and legal on public roads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a grandparent or another relative be the teaching parent?

Only when that person is the student's parent, guardian or legal custodian. These are the only three roles in the law, and the Iowa DOT says that not every family member qualifies. A relative who is qualified to give street or highway instruction under the school course law can still ride along for the 30 driving hours.

Can the course and the driving start at the same time?

Yes. The Iowa DOT says that coursework and driving may begin at the same time. The student still needs a valid instruction permit to drive, and a teaching parent or a qualified instructor must be with the student for each logged hour.

Can a homeschooled teen take parent-taught driver's ed in Iowa?

Yes. The Iowa DOT accepts a student who receives homeschool education under Iowa Code chapter 299A, as well as students at public schools and accredited nonpublic schools. The student must also be 14 to 21, have a valid instruction permit, and be in the legal custody and control of the teaching parent.

Can we take the parent-taught drive test at any Iowa DMV?

Yes. The Iowa DOT says that the student and parent may schedule the driving test at any Iowa DMV location. You need the Parent-Taught Letter of Completion before you can schedule it, so wait for the DOT email before you book.
