Kentucky Permit Test: 80% to Pass, Where to Take It and What to Study

informational·how to guide·

Where the Kentucky permit test facts come from

The pass mark, the test topics, the vision standard and the scheduling rules come from the Kentucky Driver Manual (updated July 23, 2026) and the Kentucky State Police driver testing page. The permit age, the four-year validity and the adult passenger rule come from KRS 186.450. Other sources: KRS 186.480 and KRS 186.577, House Bill 15 (2025 Acts chapter 81), a KSP news release of July 17, 2025, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Driver Licensing page. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (drive.ky.gov) and the Kentucky State Police before you drive.

What the Kentucky permit test covers

  • Rules and procedures: the written test has questions on driving rules, regulations, procedures and highway signs.
  • Signs and traffic laws: Kentucky law makes every permit applicant show that they can read and understand signs that regulate, warn and direct traffic, and that they know the traffic laws.
  • One study source: for the car (operator) test, all the information is in the Kentucky Driver Manual.
  • Not the road test: all first-time applicants must pass vision, knowledge and skills tests, but the skills (road) test comes later. For a teen, it leads to the intermediate license.

How to take the Kentucky permit test

  1. 1
    Check that you can apply

You must be a Kentucky resident and at least 15 years old. House Bill 15 set the permit age at 15 and took effect when the Governor signed it on March 25, 2025. Web pages that still say 16 are out of date.

  2. 2
Book a Kentucky State Police appointment

All testing is by appointment only, through the online scheduler on the KSP driver testing page. Since July 5, 2022, you can book at any regional testing location, whatever your county. New times open at 8 a.m., Monday to Friday, three weeks ahead. Our guide to the KSP driver testing appointment shows each booking screen.

  3. 3
Bring your documents to the appointment

Bring all the required documents to the KSP appointment, so that the test can start. If you are under 18, this includes the School Compliance Verification Form from your school (No Pass/No Drive law).

  4. 4
Pass the vision check, then the written test

The vision check comes first. Then you take the written test, and you need a score of 80% or more.

  5. 5
Get the permit from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

KYTC issues the permit to applicants who pass the written test. After you pass, go to a KYTC Driver Licensing Regional Office to apply for your permit credential.

Kentucky vision screening: what happens at each result

You see 20/40 or better without glasses or contact lenses
You move on to the written test with no lens restriction. Kentucky law tests your visual field (side vision) too, not only how sharp your vision is.
You need glasses or contact lenses to reach 20/40
You move on to the written test, and your driving privileges carry a restriction: you must wear the corrective lenses when you drive.
You do not reach 20/40
You are sent to a vision specialist. After that exam, a visual acuity of 20/60 or better makes you eligible to test for an instruction permit or operator's license.
Your vision is below the 20/60 level after the specialist exam
You may qualify for the Kentucky Bioptic Driving Program, which the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation runs. Its training lets you drive with a bioptic telescopic device restriction.

Audio, oral and language options for the Kentucky permit test

Audio tablets
The Kentucky Driver Manual says every testing office has tablets that read the test aloud in English and several other languages, with no special appointment. The KSP testing FAQ says only some locations have audio versions. Ask your testing site before your visit.
Oral test
If you cannot read English, the test can be given orally. You must still answer the signs part from your own knowledge and understanding. An oral test or an interpreter needs a special appointment, so contact the testing site before you book.
Test languages
The KSP testing page lists 12 languages, English included, for the standard car test. The July 2026 manual lists 26 languages besides English. Our Kentucky permit test languages guide compares the two lists.
Sign language interpreter
If you are deaf or hard of hearing, contact your testing site to make an appointment and ask for a sign language interpreter.

What to study for the Kentucky permit test

  1. 1
Read the whole Kentucky Driver Manual

The manual is the only approved study source for the written test, and the manual itself recommends that you review all of it. You can view and download it free of charge from the KSP driver testing page.

  2. 2
Learn the signs and the rules

Signs, rules, regulations and procedures are the test topics. Read those parts of the manual again until you know what each sign means and what each rule asks you to do.

  3. 3
Check yourself with free practice questions

Our free practice questions are in English only. They help you check what you learned from the manual; they are not questions from the official test. For example, one question page checks the Kentucky written test passing score, and another checks what the written test assesses.

What to do if you fail the Kentucky permit test

If you do not pass the written test, book another appointment with the online scheduler. Before you go back, study again the parts of the manual that gave you trouble. A failed road skills test has a different rule: you must wait at least one week from the date of the failure before you take that test again.

After you pass: from permit to intermediate license

The permit is the first of three steps for a driver under 18: the permit, the intermediate license and then the full license. Kentucky law says you must be 16 to get an intermediate license. If you are 16 or 17, you must hold the permit for at least 180 days before you apply for it. You then pass the road (skills) test with Kentucky State Police.

Key Takeaways

Kentucky permit test questions

Is the Kentucky permit test hard?

The pass mark is 80%, so you can get some questions wrong and still pass. Everything for the car test is in the Kentucky Driver Manual, so the test is easier when you read all of it. Most of the work is to learn the driving rules, the procedures and the meaning of each highway sign.

Can I wear my glasses for the Kentucky vision test?

Yes. The 20/40 standard counts with or without glasses or contact lenses. If you need them to reach 20/40, your driving privileges carry a corrective lens restriction, and you must wear them each time you drive. Bring the glasses or wear the contacts to your test appointment.

How early should I book to take the permit test on my 15th birthday?

The KSP schedule runs three weeks ahead. To test on a set date, such as your fifteenth birthday, check the online scheduler three weeks before that date. New times open at 8 a.m., and many locations fill up quickly, so look early in the day. You can also try other regional testing locations.

How long is a Kentucky instruction permit good for?

Under Kentucky law, an instruction permit for a car is valid for four years, and you can renew it. For applicants 18 and older, the manual says that if you do not renew the permit within one year after it expires, you must take the written and vision tests again.
