Kentucky Permit Test Languages: Spanish, Arabic, Swahili and More

informational·how to guide·

Where the Kentucky test language facts come from

The 26-language list, the audio and oral test rules, the interpreter rules and the 80% pass mark come from the Kentucky Driver Manual (updated July 23, 2026). The 12-language list, the sign language and audio notes, the contact details and the free study materials come from the KSP driver testing page. The English sign rule comes from KRS 186.440, and the permit age from KRS 186.450. The Spanish manual is the 2023 edition that KSP posts on its site. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (drive.ky.gov) and the Kentucky State Police before you drive.

How to check your language at your Kentucky test site

Both lists are official, but they do not match, and the KSP list is for the standard operator test only. For a language without a star, ask how your test site gives the test. Before you book, email kspdrivertesting@ky.gov or call (800) 542-5990.

Audio test, oral test or interpreter: what to do in your case

You want to hear the test read aloud
The manual says all testing offices have tablets that read the test aloud in English and several other languages, with no special appointment. The KSP FAQ says only some locations have audio versions. Ask KSP before you go.
You cannot read English
You can ask for an oral test, and you need a special appointment for it. You must answer the road sign questions from your own knowledge. Where a location has no audio version, KSP may give the test orally: call (800) 542-5990, Option 3.
You need an interpreter for the written test
Contact the testing site directly before you make an appointment. An interpreter needs a special appointment.
You are deaf or hard of hearing
Contact your testing site to make an appointment, and ask for a sign language interpreter.
You plan to bring an interpreter to the road test
Interpreters cannot ride in the vehicle during the road test. An interpreter can help you before and after the test.

The Kentucky Driver Manual in Spanish

A Spanish edition, "Driver Manual - Spanish", is on the KSP driver testing page. It is the 2023 edition, and KSP prepared it. It gives the same 80% pass mark, the same oral test and interpreter rules, and the same rule that no interpreter rides in the car on the road test. Some rules changed after 2023: the Spanish edition says you must be 16 to apply for a permit, but since March 25, 2025, Kentucky law (KRS 186.450) lets you apply for an instruction permit at 15. Study with the Spanish edition, and check the rules in the English manual of July 23, 2026.

What the written test covers and how to practice

The test asks about driving rules, regulations, procedures and highway signs, and you need at least 80% to pass. The Kentucky Driver Manual is the only approved study source for the written test, and all KSP driver testing materials are free to view and download. Our free Kentucky Class D practice test is in English only. To check the basics first, see the pass mark question and the question on what the test covers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take the Kentucky permit test in Spanish?

Yes. Spanish is on both the Driver Manual list and the KSP page list. Spanish has a star in the manual, so it is on the testing software, you can ask to take the test electronically, and it comes in audio form. You can also study with the Spanish edition of the Driver Manual.

Is the Kentucky permit test on a computer?

It can be. The seven starred languages in the manual (Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, French, Japanese, Somali and Spanish) are on the testing software, and you can ask to take the test electronically in them. Testing offices also use tablets for the audio version. For other languages, ask your testing site how it gives the test.

Is the Kentucky Driver Manual free?

Yes. All KSP driver testing materials can be viewed and downloaded free of charge, in English and in the 2023 Spanish edition. The Kentucky Driver Manual is the only approved study source for the written permit test, so study it first.

Do I need to understand English to get a Kentucky license?

Yes, for road signs. Kentucky law (KRS 186.440) says a person who cannot understand highway warnings or direction signs in English cannot get an operator's license. You can take the written test in another language, but in an oral test you must answer the road sign questions from your own knowledge.

Are the Kentucky motorcycle and CDL permit tests in the same languages?

The KSP list of 12 languages is for the standard operator test only. If you need a motorcycle or CDL permit test in another language, contact KSP at kspdrivertesting@ky.gov or (800) 542-5990 before you book.
