Manitoba Class 5 Road Test: When to Book, What to Bring, What to Expect
When can I take the Manitoba Class 5 road test?
First-time drivers in Manitoba must spend at least nine months in the Learner Stage (Class 5L) before they can take the Class 5 road test. Book and pay at any Autopac agent: tests are by appointment only, on weekdays. The road test costs CAD 35 (as of 2026). Check in 15 minutes early with a registered, insured car in good working order. After a fail, you wait 14 days.
Where this information comes from
The facts here come from the Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) Driver's Handbook pages on the Class 5 road test, on scheduling a test, on the backing skill test and on test costs and retests, from the complete Driver's Handbook (02/02/2026) and from the MPI Graduated Driver Licensing guide (26/08/2026). The road test fee is set in the Charges for Licences, Registrations, Permits and Other Services Regulation (M.R. 42/2006), as in force from August 1, 2026. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Manitoba Public Insurance (mpi.mb.ca) before you drive.
How long you must hold a Class 5L before the Manitoba road test
New drivers (anyone who held no driver's licence anywhere before April 1, 2002) have a nine-month learning period in the Learner Stage, Class 5L. When the nine months are complete, you may apply for the road test. Only time with a valid licence counts: you earn no stage time while your licence is invalid, cancelled, prohibited or suspended. A Class 5L applicant must be at least 16. The Driver's Handbook also lets you apply at 15 1/2 if you are enrolled in MPI's Driver Z Program, "in a course that is currently in progress."

How to book your Manitoba Class 5 road test
- 1Check that you are eligible
Make sure your nine-month learning period is complete, or that your credit from another jurisdiction covers it, and that your licence is valid.
- 2Go to an Autopac agent
All knowledge and road tests are by appointment only. Pay for the test and book the appointment at any Autopac agent. Some booking and payment services are also online at mpi.mb.ca.
- 3Choose a test location and a weekday
Road tests take place on weekdays only, except holidays. The agent can give you the available appointments at any testing location.
- 4Pay the CAD 35 fee
The Class 5 road test costs CAD 35 under the regulation in force from August 1, 2026. The guide to Manitoba test fees and retake rules lists the fees for the other tests.
What happens on the Manitoba road test
The examiner checks that you can drive a Class 5 vehicle safely and legally in typical traffic, and the test also shows the errors that you must correct. You are judged on your driving skills. Only authorized MPI employees may ride with you during the test. A backing test is part of the road test (see below).
Test-day checklist: your car and check-in
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Condition | Bring your own vehicle in good working order. |
| Papers | Bring the Vehicle Registration Certificate that shows the vehicle is registered and insured. |
| Seating | The vehicle must have a seat for the driver examiner. |
| Type of vehicle | No heavy or agricultural equipment. |
| Check-in | Check in 15 minutes before your appointment time. |
| If the car is not right | The road test is cancelled and your fees are not refunded. |
How the Manitoba backing test works
You back your vehicle into a space of about 1.85 metres by 7.5 metres, marked with testing poles. First, you stop before the backing area and the examiner explains the test. You then have three attempts or four minutes, whichever comes first. Each attempt has three movements: backward, forward and backward again. At the end, the vehicle must be parked correctly. Try the free question on backing during a Class 5 road test.
Automatic fails in the Manitoba backing test
| What you do | Result |
|---|---|
| The vehicle touches one of the poles | Automatic failure |
| You drive over the curb | Automatic failure (your tires may touch the curb) |
| You drive between the poles that mark the front or the back of a vehicle | Automatic failure |
| You back up or move forward while a vehicle passes close by (a dangerous act) | Automatic failure |
If you fail the Manitoba road test
Which licence you get after you pass
When you pass the Class 5 road test, you move to the Intermediate Stage, Class 5I. This stage lasts at least 15 months, and it has its own rules. The guide to Manitoba Class 5I rules explains the passenger limits, night driving and the move to the Full Stage.
How to practise for the Manitoba road test
Set up cones in an empty parking lot and practise the three backing movements in a space of the test size. Before each move backward, check behind you in your mirrors and over your shoulder. The day before the test, check that the car is in good working order and that the Vehicle Registration Certificate is in it. To revise the rules of the road, use the free practice tests on this site. They are in English only.

Manitoba Class 5 road test: common questions
Do I need a supervising driver to drive to my road test in Manitoba?
Yes, if you drive there yourself. Until you pass, you hold a Class 5L licence, and a 5L driver must be accompanied by a qualified supervising driver who is the only front-seat passenger. Your supervisor cannot stay in the car for the test, because only authorized MPI employees may ride with you.
Can I take my Manitoba road test in a tractor or a farm truck?
Not in a tractor: road tests are not done in heavy or agricultural equipment. A Class 5L driver is also not allowed to drive a Class 3 vehicle registered as a farm truck. Use a vehicle in good working order, with a seat for the examiner and a Vehicle Registration Certificate that shows it is registered and insured.
I live in a rural area of Manitoba. Where do I take the road test?
Mobile Test Units serve rural customers who live outside the fixed test locations. Any Autopac agent can give you the Mobile Test Unit locations and schedules, and they are also on mpi.mb.ca. The test is still by appointment only, so book it with the agent first.
Can I take the Manitoba road test in French?
Yes. Manitoba road tests are available in English and French. Tell the Autopac agent your language preference when you book the appointment. Two test locations list French Language Services: 930 St. Mary's Road in Winnipeg and 91 North Front Drive in Steinbach.
