Manitoba Road Test and Knowledge Test Cost (2026), Retake Rules
How much are the Manitoba knowledge test and road test?
The Manitoba Class 5 knowledge test costs CAD 12, and the Class 5 road test costs CAD 35 (as of 2026). Pages that show CAD 10 and CAD 30 are out of date: Manitoba Regulation 72/2026 raised the fees on August 1, 2026. After you pass the knowledge test, the licence costs CAD 20 plus base driver premium charges of up to CAD 45, plus any applicable additional driver premium.
Where this information comes from
The fees come from the Charges for Licences, Registrations, Permits and Other Services Regulation (M.R. 42/2006), as changed by M.R. 72/2026. The test rules come from Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI): the Driver's Handbook pages Key Points About Your Tests, Basic Class 5 Licensing Requirements and Scheduling Your Knowledge or Road Test, the Graduated Driver Licensing guide (August 2026) and the Class Licences brochure (August 2026). This guide is current as of 2026. Fees can change, so check the price with your Autopac agent when you book. Confirm the rules with Manitoba Public Insurance (mpi.mb.ca) before you drive.
Manitoba test fees at a glance
| Test | Fee (as of 2026) |

| Class 5 road test | CAD 35 |
| Class 6 (motorcycle) road test | CAD 35 |
| Class 4 road test | CAD 40 |
| Class 1, 2 or 3 road test | CAD 50 |
| Air brake test | CAD 35 |
Why do older pages say CAD 10 and CAD 30?
Manitoba Regulation 72/2026 came into force on August 1, 2026. Since that date the law sets CAD 12 for the knowledge test and CAD 35 for the Class 5 road test. The complete PDF version of the Driver's Handbook (back cover dated 02/02/2026) is older, and it still shows CAD 10 and CAD 30. The online Handbook, the Graduated Driver Licensing guide and the Class Licences brochure show the new fees. When two pages disagree, use the law and the newest MPI page.
Is the knowledge test included in Driver Education charges?
Yes, one. The charges for the MPI Driver Education Program include one knowledge test. If you need another try, each further knowledge test costs CAD 12. Driver Education students under 16 must give a completed Driver Education form before they take the knowledge test.
How long must you wait to retake a test?
What to do after three failed Class 5 road tests
- 1Take at least 5 hours of lessons
After three unsuccessful road tests, you must take a minimum of 5 hours of professional instruction before you book a fourth road test. The driving school must hold an MPI permit. Before you pay, check that the school and instructor hold valid Manitoba permits.
- 2Get a signed Driving Instruction Verification form
The form must show the driving instructor's permit number.
- 3Take the form to an Autopac agent
Show the signed form to an Autopac agent, pay for the road test and book it.
- 4Repeat for each later attempt
You need another 5 hours of driving instruction before each additional attempt.
What does the licence cost after you pass?
After you pass the knowledge test and meet the vision and medical standards, you must buy a licence to drive. For a new driver in GDL, this is the Class 5L (Learner Stage) licence. It costs CAD 20 plus base driver premium charges of up to CAD 45, plus any applicable additional driver premium. The driver's licence charge and base driver premium are assessed each year.
How to pass the first time and avoid a second fee
Each failed test means a new fee and a wait before the next try. The knowledge test covers traffic laws, safe driving practices and road signs, so read the Driver's Handbook first. Manitoba test fees and retakes: common questions
Do I have to pay again if I retake the Manitoba road test?
Yes. Each test has its own charge, so you pay again for each attempt: CAD 35 for a Class 5 road test and CAD 12 for a knowledge test (as of 2026). You pay for the test when you book it at an Autopac agent. Some booking and payment services are also available through MPI Online Services at mpi.mb.ca.
Do I pay for the air brake test if I take it with my road test?
No. There is no additional charge for the air brake test when you take a Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 road test in a vehicle that has air brakes. If you take the air brake test alone, it costs CAD 35 (as of 2026).
Do drivers who are 65 or older pay the test fees?
No. A person aged 65 or older does not pay the knowledge test or road test charges. The exception is a test that the registrar requires you to take to check a medical condition, or under section 29 of The Drivers and Vehicles Act (for example, a further examination of a licence holder).
How do I know a driving school has an MPI permit?
Ask the school or the instructor to show you the permit, or call the MPI Permit Unit at 204-985-8063. All driving schools in Manitoba must have a valid MPI permit. After three failed road tests, your 5 hours of lessons must come from a school with this permit.
