Manitoba Driver's Licence Anniversary Date and Renewal Explained

informational·how to guide·

Where these rules come from

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) explains the anniversary date in its Driver's Handbook, on the pages Keep Your Licence Valid and About the Renewal Process. The MPI Graduated Driver Licensing guide, dated 26/08/2026, repeats the main rules. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Manitoba Public Insurance (mpi.mb.ca) before you drive.

How to work out your anniversary date

  1. 1
    Find your birthday

Use the month and day of your birthday, for example Sept. 21.

  2. 2
    Count four months forward

Four months after Sept. 21 is Jan. 21.

  3. 3
    Take away one day

Four months less a day after Sept. 21 is Jan. 20. That is your anniversary date, and it is the same date every year.

Why you pay every year on a licence valid for up to five years

The Manitoba driver's licence is valid for up to five years, but it is reassessed each year. The driver's licence charge and base driver premium are assessed annually and are due on your anniversary date.
Your premium depends on your position on the Driver Safety Rating (DSR) scale, which depends on your driving record. A new driver with a first licence starts at the base level for both vehicle and driver's licence premiums. For each year you drive safely, you move up the scale and start saving.

What your first Class 5 licence costs

After you pass the knowledge test and meet the vision and medical standards, you buy your licence for $20 plus base driver premium charges of up to $45, plus any applicable additional driver premium. All amounts are in Canadian dollars.

What happens if you do not pay by the anniversary date

You do not pay the assessed charges for your licence by the anniversary date
Your licence can be suspended.
You are a Learner Stage (Class 5L) driver and your licence is not active
You do not earn credit in the Learner Stage for the time you are not licensed.
You are an Intermediate Stage (Class 5I) driver and your licence is not active
You do not earn credit in the Intermediate Stage for the time you are not licensed. The guide to the Class 5I rules explains this stage.

How often you renew in person and get a new photo

Once every five years, you receive a renewal notice for your driver's licence, your vehicle insurance or both. You then visit an Autopac agent to review your coverage and renew before it lapses. Between renewals, you visit an agent only if you want to change or cancel your licence or policy. The practice question on five-year renewals and yearly payments checks this rule.
You need a new photo every five years. Your first photo is taken at an Autopac agent or at a Manitoba Public Insurance Service Centre.

Carrying your licence, the U.S. border and the under-18 date

  • Carry it: your driver's licence must be in your possession at all times while driving. You must show it, with your vehicle registration card, when a peace officer asks.
  • Border: the Manitoba driver's licence cannot be used to cross the United States border.
  • Under 18: drivers under the age of 18 are issued licences that show the exact date of their 18th birthday.

Key takeaways

  • Your anniversary date is four months less a day after your birthday: Sept. 21 gives Jan. 20.
  • The licence is valid for up to five years, but you pay each year on the anniversary date because the licence is reassessed every year.
  • You can pay online at mpi.mb.ca, through your financial institution, or in person wherever Autopac is sold.
  • If you do not pay by the anniversary date, your licence can be suspended, and Learner and Intermediate drivers do not earn stage credit for the unlicensed time.

Manitoba licence anniversary date: common questions

Do I get a bill for my Manitoba licence each year?

Yes. In the years between renewals, called reassessment years, you receive an annual statement of account that tells you what you owe. In a renewal year, which comes once every five years, you receive a renewal notice. Pay by your anniversary date, or your licence can be suspended.

Does my Autopac renew at the same time as my licence?

Yes, if you own a vehicle. Your Autopac renews and expires at the same time as your driver's licence. You receive a renewal notice once every five years for your driver's licence, your vehicle insurance or both, and you still pay for your licence and your vehicle insurance every year.

How long is a temporary Manitoba licence certificate valid?

Up to 45 days. When you are issued a new Manitoba driver's licence, you get a temporary driver's licence certificate. Carry it whenever you drive, until your permanent one-piece licence arrives in the mail. The practice question on the temporary licence certificate checks this rule.

Why did my Manitoba licence payment go up?

Your place on the Driver Safety Rating scale comes from your driving record for the past year. Traffic convictions, at-fault claims and alcohol- or drug-related administrative suspensions move you down the scale, and moving down means higher premiums in most cases. Your yearly notice shows where you are on the scale and what you owe. The practice question on how high-risk driving affects premiums checks this idea.
