Montana Driver’s License Documents: What to Bring (REAL ID)
What documents do you need for a Montana driver’s license?
Bring hard copies of documents in three groups to your MVD appointment: one proof of authorized presence, two proofs of identity (two primary, or one primary and one secondary) and one proof of Montana residence. Know your Social Security number, but you do not show the card. A REAL ID is optional, needs two proofs of residence and costs $25 more.
Where the Montana document facts come from
The document groups come from the MVD required documents page and the Montana Driver Manual (May 2026). The REAL ID steps and the $25 fee come from the MVD REAL ID page and the MVD REAL ID Checklist. Other answers come from the MVD frequently asked questions, other MVD pages and Montana Code section 61-5-105. The MVD is part of the Montana Department of Justice. This guide gives examples; the MVD pages have the full lists. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Montana Motor Vehicle Division (mvdmt.gov) before you drive.
The three groups of Montana license documents at a glance
| Group | How many | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Proof of authorized presence | 1 | Certified birth certificate from a government agency, U.S. passport or passport card, permanent resident card |
| Proof of identity | 2 (two primary, or one primary and one secondary) | Primary: certified birth certificate, U.S. passport, photo driver license, current learner permit. Secondary: Social Security card, school transcript, traffic education certificate |
| Proof of Montana residence | 1 (2 for REAL ID) | Pay stub, bank statement or utility bill dated within 4 months; signed rental agreement; Montana voter registration card |
What counts as proof of authorized presence in Montana?
This document shows that you are a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to be in the U.S. New applicants for a Montana driver license or ID card need it, and so do new residents who transfer a license. Examples:
- An original or certified birth certificate from a government agency. A hospital birth certificate does not work.
- A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card.
- A valid, unexpired permanent resident card (form I-551).
- A valid, unexpired foreign passport with an attached I-94 form or an unexpired I-551 stamp.
What counts as proof of identity in Montana?
This proof shows your full legal name and date of birth. You give two documents: two primary documents, or one primary and one secondary document.
Primary documents include a certified birth certificate from a U.S. or Canadian jurisdiction, a valid U.S. passport, a color photo driver license that is not expired for more than four years, and a current learner permit with your photo and date of birth.
Secondary documents include an original Social Security card, a certified school record or transcript, and a certificate from a Montana-approved traffic or driver's education course.
What counts as proof of Montana residence?
You bring one document that proves your Montana residence address. It must show your name and the same address as your license application. A payroll check or stub, a bank statement or a utility bill counts if it is dated or issued not more than four months before you apply. An original rental agreement or rent receipt signed by the landlord also works, and so does a Montana voter registration card. A PO Box does not prove residence. If you do not get mail at your home, also give a mailing address or PO Box.
Before you go to the MVD exam station
- Book an appointment. The MVD always recommends one. Schedule online through mvdmt.gov, or call the Customer Care Center at 1 (406) 444-1772.
- Bring the documents to your written test appointment. Adults 18 and over also pass a written test, a vision test and a road test. Try our free question on which tests a new driver must pass.
- Bring certified copies where the MVD asks for them. A certified document has an official stamp or seal from the state where it was issued.
- Expect to get your papers back. The MVD scans a copy and gives you the originals.

Do you need a REAL ID in Montana?
No. Montana does not require residents to have a REAL ID. But since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another accepted ID, such as a passport or passport card, to fly inside the U.S. or to enter federal facilities. A REAL ID does not replace a passport for international travel. Minors do not need a REAL ID to fly when an adult travels with them, but they may still apply for one. Adding a REAL ID to a Montana license or ID card costs $25 more, added to the license fee.
How to get ready for a Montana REAL ID
- 1Gather one document for name, date of birth and presence
One document can prove all three, for example a certified U.S. birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport or a permanent resident card. A photocopy or a picture of a birth certificate does not work.
- 2Gather two proofs of Montana residence
The two documents may be the same type, such as two utility bills. Each must show your full legal name and current physical address and be unexpired or dated within one year. A PO Box does not work.
- 3Prove every name change
If your current legal name does not match your documents, bring one certified document for each name change. A church-issued marriage certificate does not work.
- 4Check your Social Security record
Know your complete Social Security number. The MVD checks it with the Social Security Administration, and the name on file there must match your current legal name.
- 5Book an in-person appointment
A REAL ID from another state does not transfer, so every applicant brings the required documents. Bring a completed application. The MVD takes a new photo.

Montana license documents: common questions
Can I use a phone bill or a PO Box to prove my Montana address?
For a REAL ID, a phone bill counts if it shows your full legal name and current physical address and is unexpired or dated within one year. For a standard license, a utility bill, bank statement or pay stub counts if it is dated within four months. A PO Box never proves residence; it is only a mailing address.
What if I am missing a document for my Montana REAL ID?
You can prove your name and date of birth with one document and your authorized presence with other documents. If you still cannot give a required document, ask the MVD for exceptions processing. You complete a form, give a good reason and bring additional or alternative documents. The MVD then decides.
How can I tell if my Montana license is a REAL ID?
A Montana REAL ID driver license or ID card has a gold star in the upper right-hand corner. A standard license or ID card issued after January 2019 shows the words “NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES” in that corner. A temporary credential printed on paper is not REAL ID compliant.
Can I get a REAL ID before my Montana license expires?
Yes. You can get a REAL ID at any time with an in-person appointment, so you do not have to wait for renewal. Bring a completed application and the REAL ID documents, have a new photo taken and pay the fee. The REAL ID costs $25 more, added to the license fee.
Can I have both a Montana driver license and a state ID card?
No. Under Montana law, a resident may have only one credential. You choose a driver license or a state ID card, each with or without REAL ID. If you want a REAL ID, it goes on the one credential that you hold.
