Moving to New Mexico: How to Transfer Your Driver's License in 2026

informational·how to guide·

Where these New Mexico license facts come from

The transfer rule, tests and documents come from the New Mexico MVD moving-to-New-Mexico page and the MVD driver's license, REAL ID and testing pages. The fees come from the MVD license cost page. Teen rules come from the MVD instructional permit and provisional license page, the MVD Driver Procedures Manual (MVD staff policy), and the bill texts of 2011 Senate Bill 9 and 2019 Senate Bill 278. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the New Mexico MVD (mvd.newmexico.gov) before you drive.

When you must switch to a New Mexico license

Once you establish residency in New Mexico, you must surrender your license from any other state to the MVD and apply for a New Mexico license. Until then, a visitor who is at least 15 and carries a valid license from their home state or country may drive here. The MVD Driver Procedures Manual repeats the rule: get a New Mexico license when you become a resident.

How to get a New Mexico license when you move here

  1. 1
Choose REAL ID or Standard and gather your proofs

For a REAL ID, bring one proof of identification number, one proof of identity and two proofs of New Mexico residency. For a Standard Driver's License, bring one proof of identity and age and two proofs of New Mexico residency. If you are 18 to 24, ask the MVD before you go if you must also bring a None for the Road (DWI class) certificate.

  2. 2
Go to an MVD field office in person

You must go into an MVD field office to get your New Mexico license. Staff at any field office can issue your temporary license.

  3. 3
    Pass the eye test

Take the eye exam when you apply. With a current out-of-state license, it is the only test you take.

  4. 4
Pay the license fee and the records check

Pay the fee for a four-year or eight-year license. Drivers who move from out of state also pay a one-time $15 fee for a DWI records check.

  5. 5
    Hand over your old license

The MVD takes your out-of-state license and gives you a temporary license. Your New Mexico license is processed and sent to you by mail.

What a New Mexico license costs when you move from out of state

License lengthLicense feeTotal with the one-time $15 DWI records check
Four years$18$33
Eight years$34$49

How the $15 records check and extra office fees work

Example: you pick the eight-year license, so you pay $34 + $15 = $49 at an MVD field office. The MVD says state law requires a DWI records check for all drivers who move to New Mexico from out of state. You pay this fee one time only. MVD Partner offices are private offices under contract with the MVD, and they charge administrative fees on top of these amounts. For permit and provisional fees, see the New Mexico driver's license fees guide.

REAL ID or Standard: which one to choose

May 7, 2025 was the federal deadline for full REAL ID enforcement. A REAL ID, a passport or another federally accepted document is now required to board domestic flights and enter many federal buildings. If you cannot show proof of lawful status, you may apply only for the Standard Driver's License. The Standard license needs no fingerprints, and you can choose four or eight years. It replaced the old Driving Authorization Card. See which MVD documents count for each license before you go.

What happens to your old license

You hand your license from the other state to the MVD when you apply. The MVD punches one hole in it and returns it to you. Together with your temporary license, the punched license works as identification for up to 45 days from the date of issue. The two cards count as identification only when you show them together.

Moving with a teen: Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) transfer rules

Your teen is under 18 and applies for a first New Mexico license.
The teen goes through the New Mexico Graduated Driver Licensing system. If the other state has a similar program, the MVD can issue a New Mexico instructional permit or provisional license to replace the current one.
Your teen holds an out-of-state permit.
Six months with a permit or equivalent, 50 logged practice hours and a passed road test make a teen eligible for a provisional license. Our free question on the six-month permit rule tests this step.
Your teen holds a provisional or equivalent license and is at least 16 and a half.
One year on that license can lead to a regular Class D license when all other New Mexico requirements are met. The 2019 law text (Senate Bill 278) asks for 12 months on a provisional license before the application, plus 30 days for each traffic conviction in that time. Try our free 12-month provisional question.
Your teen is under 18 and holds a regular license from another state.
The MVD Driver Procedures Manual still asks for a driver education certificate or transcript. A high school course counts. A commercial school course needs at least 30 classroom hours and 6 behind-the-wheel hours.

Permit and provisional rules for a teen who moves to New Mexico

  • A permit holder logs 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours at night.
  • The permit supervisor is 21 or older and has held a license for at least three years, in New Mexico or another state (2011 Senate Bill 9).
  • A provisional licensee may carry not more than one passenger under 21 who is not immediate family (2011 Senate Bill 9). MVD text adds that this limit applies unless a licensed driver 21 or older is in the vehicle.

Key takeaways

  • Once you live in New Mexico, surrender your old license at an MVD field office. With a current out-of-state license, you take only the eye test.
  • Budget $33 for four years or $49 for eight years at an MVD field office, including the one-time $15 DWI records check.
  • A REAL ID works for federal purposes such as domestic flights. The Standard Driver's License is valid for driving but not for federal purposes.
  • Teens under 18 follow the New Mexico GDL system and need a driver education certificate.
  • Next step: practice on our free New Mexico Class D practice test, which is in English only.

Moving to New Mexico: common license questions

What if my out-of-state license has expired?

Ask the MVD before you go, because MVD pages differ. Some MVD pages ask for the written test when a license expired one year or more ago. The MVD Driver Procedures Manual and the newer MVD credential page say five years. MVD pages agree that a license expired over five years also needs the road test.

Can I get a New Mexico license if my old license is suspended?

No. The MVD does not issue a license while your driving privileges are suspended, revoked or denied by New Mexico or any other state. Resolve the suspension or revocation first, and then apply at an MVD field office.

Will New Mexico see my driving record from my old state?

It can. Under the 2019 law text (Senate Bill 278), the department may ask the other state for a copy of your driver record when you apply. Every driver who moves to New Mexico from out of state also gets a DWI records check, which is the one-time $15 fee.

Do I need a New Mexico license before I drive for pay?

Yes. The MVD Driver Procedures Manual lets a visitor aged 15 or older drive on a valid home-state license. That permission ends when the person becomes a resident, and before the person takes a job where someone pays them to drive. Get your New Mexico license first.

Does my teen need driver education to transfer a license?

Yes. Under 2019 Senate Bill 278, an applicant under 18 for a first New Mexico license shows an approved driver education course with a DWI prevention component. New Mexico may accept a course from another state that substantially meets its requirements. If the certificate shows no DWI content, the MVD asks for proof of it or the None for the Road class.
