What to Bring to the Nevada DMV: ID, Proof of Address and Real ID

informational·how to guide·

Where the Nevada DMV document facts come from

The document lists, the card types and the Real ID rules come from the Nevada DMV proof of identity and residency page. The Real ID choice, the upgrade rule, the parent address form and the 30-day rule for new residents come from the Nevada Driver's Handbook (DMV 700, March 2024). The flying rule comes from the Nevada DMV identification cards page. The teen, translator, Quick Cards, Driver Authorization Card and appointment facts come from other Nevada DMV pages and DMV news releases. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Nevada DMV (dmv.nv.gov) before you drive.

Which ID documents does the Nevada DMV accept?

Every first-time applicant for a Nevada driver's license, ID card or Driver Authorization Card must prove identity and residency. For a Real ID, accepted identity documents include a U.S. passport or passport card, a U.S. birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization and a Permanent Resident Card.
The DMV does not accept a hospital-issued birth certificate, a foreign driver's license, a military ID card or a consular ID card as proof of identity for a Real ID or a standard card. Many of these documents are acceptable for a Driver Authorization Card. The Real ID list and the standard list are not the same, so check the list for your card.

Which documents prove your Nevada address?

You show two documents with your name and your Nevada residential address. The DMV has two lists.
The first list needs a document dated within 60 days, such as a rent receipt, lease, utility bill, bank statement or pay stub. The second list takes the most recent document, such as car insurance, a medical bill, tax records or a mortgage or deed of trust. You can also use a DMV-approved form: DMV 005 (Certification of Nevada Residency), DMV 115 (Relief Agency/Shelter Certification) or DMV 116 (Property Owner Residency Affidavit).

How to get your Nevada documents ready

  1. 1
    Choose your card

Decide if you want a Real ID or a standard card. The choice is yours, and the identity list is different for each card.

  2. 2
    Find one proof of identity

Pick one document from the DMV list for your card. Bring the original or a certified U.S. copy.

  3. 3
    Add your Social Security proof

Bring your Social Security card, a W-2, an IRS Form 1099 or a printed pay stub. It must show your current legal name and your full Social Security number.

  4. 4
    Collect two address proofs

Pick two documents from the DMV lists, and check the date on each one.

  5. 5
Add name change papers and translations

If the name on your identity document is not your current name, bring proof of each change. Get each non-English document translated by a DMV-approved translator.

  6. 6
    Book an appointment

Most Nevada DMV services are by appointment only. At a rural office, you can book only one day ahead.

Real ID, standard card or Driver Authorization Card: what is the difference?

Nevada has three card types. A Real ID license, permit or ID card has a gold Nevada outline with a star cutout. It is valid for boarding domestic flights and entering federal buildings. A Real ID must show your physical address.
A standard Nevada license does not meet Real ID rules and is marked "Not for Real ID Purpose." It may show a physical or a mailing address. A Driver Authorization Card (DAC) is marked "NOT VALID FOR ID." It is for eligible residents who cannot meet the identity rules for a standard card, and it is not valid for boarding aircraft. Our Nevada Driver Authorization Card guide has more.

Do you need a Real ID in Nevada?

You plan to fly within the U.S.
Consider a Real ID. Since May 7, 2025, a standard Nevada ID card is not accepted to board an aircraft.
You only want to drive
A Real ID is optional. You can choose a standard license instead.
You hold U.S. immigration documents
Your Real ID or standard card is marked "Limited Term" when immigration documents prove your identity. Nevada does not issue licenses or ID cards to tourists.

What must a teen bring to the Nevada DMV?

Nevada residents can apply for an instruction permit at age 15½ (try our free question on the minimum permit age).
Anyone under 18 must prove they meet the Nevada school attendance rules with the Certification of Attendance (DMV 301), which is valid for 60 days. A teen who does not have a Nevada ID card also brings proof of identity, proof of Social Security number and two documents showing a Nevada residential address. The teen also submits the DP-38 Minor Affidavit and the DMV 002 application. A parent can prove a minor's address by signing a DMV-approved form that says the minor lives at the same address.

Can you apply online, and when must new residents apply?

Adults can start online. With Quick Cards, you apply with a DriveNV account for a first-time license, ID card, instruction permit or Driver Authorization Card. People under 18 cannot use Quick Cards. After you apply, you still visit an office to pay, show your documents and take your photo.
If you just moved here, the Nevada Driver's Handbook says to apply for a license within 30 days after you become a resident. See our guide on moving to Nevada and your driver's license, or try the free question on the new resident deadline.

Key takeaways

  • Bring one proof of identity, one proof of Social Security number and two proofs of Nevada residential address, as valid originals or certified U.S. copies.
  • A non-English document needs a DMV-approved translation. A name change needs proof of each change.
  • A Real ID is optional, but a standard Nevada card is not for federal ID purposes. A Real ID shows your physical address.
  • Under 18, add the DMV 301 attendance form, which is valid for 60 days, and the DP-38 affidavit. Book a DMV appointment before you go.

Nevada DMV documents: common questions

Can I use my passport to fly instead of a Real ID?

Yes. In May 2025, the Nevada DMV said that an unexpired passport or military ID is accepted at TSA airport checkpoints, so people who have one do not need to rush to an office for a Real ID. A standard Nevada ID card is not accepted to board an aircraft.

Can I use an out-of-state license as ID at the Nevada DMV?

For a standard Nevada card, a valid Real ID license, permit or ID card from another state is accepted as proof of identity. A license that is not a Real ID is not accepted, and a "Limited Term" Real ID needs immigration documents too. For a Nevada Real ID, bring a document from the Real ID list, such as a U.S. passport or birth certificate.

Can I use a printout from my online bank account as proof of address?

Yes. The DMV accepts original printouts from online accounts. A bank or credit card statement must be dated within 60 days and show your name and Nevada residential address. You need two address documents in total, and the second one can come from either DMV list.

What if my name is different on my documents?

Bring proof of each name change, such as a government-issued marriage certificate, divorce decree, adoption records or a court order. If you changed your name more than once, bring proof of each change. A Social Security card does not prove a name change. The DMV uses your name exactly as it is on your documents.

Who can translate my foreign documents for the Nevada DMV?

Only a translator on the DMV-approved list. The translation must be a typed or printed translation of the full document, with the translator's DMV number, printed name and signature. A document without a valid translator number is rejected at the DMV office. There is no standard price, so compare translators.

How do I upgrade my Nevada license to a Real ID?

Bring documents that prove your name, date of birth, Social Security number and Nevada residential address. Use the Real ID identity list, because some documents that work for a standard card, such as a Real ID from another state, are not on it. Your new Real ID must show your physical address.
