Nevada DMV Written Test: 25 Questions, Passing Score, Online Option

informational·how to guide·

Where the Nevada written test facts come from

The question count, pass mark, online and office rules, fees, retake rules and interpreter rules come from the Nevada DMV written test page. The test topics and the oral exam option come from the Nevada Driver's Handbook (DMV 700, March 2024). The permit, adult and new-resident rules come from the DMV instruction permit, adult license, first license and New Resident Guide pages. The fees also appear on the DMV fee page, and the start of online testing and the same-day rule come from an October 2023 DMV news release. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Nevada DMV (dmv.nv.gov) before you drive.

How many questions can you miss on the Nevada permit test?

You can miss 5 of the 25 questions. Twenty correct answers is exactly 80 percent, so 19 correct answers is a fail. The questions check your knowledge of highway signs and markings, traffic laws and safe driving practices, and they are based on the Nevada Driver's Handbook. A free question on who may supervise a permit driver is one way to check a permit rule.

Can you take the Nevada DMV written test online?

Yes. The DMV offers the written test online through KnowTo Drive Nevada for instruction permits and non-commercial Class C licenses. Online testing started on October 2, 2023. You can start at any hour with no appointment, and your results go to the DMV automatically.
Before you start, set up a computer with a front-facing camera and plan for the 60-minute limit. Check the online test site for any charge that it adds to the DMV testing fee.

Nevada written test: common questions

Can I take the Nevada written test on my phone?

No. The online test needs a computer with a front-facing camera, and touch-screen devices such as phones and tablets are not supported. If you only have a phone or a tablet, take the test at a DMV office, where it runs on the office's touch-screen computers and has no time limit.

Can I take the test online and again at the DMV on the same day?

Plan your retest for the next day. The current DMV test page says that after a fail you can retake the test the next day. In its October 2023 release about online testing, the DMV also said that a test taken online could not be repeated in person at an office on the same day.

How long are my Nevada written test results good for?

Your written test results are valid for 1 year from the date you pass, so plan your permit or drive test within that year. If you get an instruction permit and it has been expired for more than 30 days, you must take the written test again.

Can I take the Nevada written test in Spanish or with an interpreter?

Yes, the test is in Spanish both online and at DMV offices. An applicant who lacks English or Spanish language skills may use an interpreter at the written test. The interpreter cannot be a family member and must bring a letter of approval from a government agency, court, educational institution or non-profit advocacy group. You pay any interpreter fee. Interpreters are not allowed at the drive test.

What if I have trouble reading the Nevada written test?

The Nevada Driver's Handbook says that if you have problems reading or understanding the written test, you may ask for an oral examination. DMV offices also offer the test in audio format. Go early and ask at the office, because written testing closes 30 minutes to 1 hour before the office closes.
