NJ Road Test: What to Bring, What Is Tested and Retest Rules
What do I bring to the NJ road test?
Bring your original 6 Points of ID documents on paper, your validated permit, a registered, inspected and insured car, and a New Jersey licensed driver who is 21 or older with at least three years of license. Book an appointment. Drivers under 21 also need red GDL decals. If you got your permit before age 21, on or after February 1, 2025, bring a signed BA-CSD form.
Where the New Jersey road test rules come from
The rules come from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) basic road test page, the MVC first license page and the New Jersey Driver Manual (2026). The BA-CSD, 6 Points of ID, decal and age-16 details come from other MVC pages, the BA-CSD form and a 2025 MVC release. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (nj.gov/mvc) before you drive.
NJ road test checklist: what to bring
- 6 Points of ID. Bring the same documents that you used to get your permit. They must be original paper documents, not images on a phone. The guide to New Jersey 6 Points of ID explains the points.
- Your validated permit. It must be valid and legible, and it cannot be laminated.
- A licensed driver who comes with you. This person must be 21 or older and have held a New Jersey license for at least three years.
- A registered, inspected and insured car. It must have a current inspection sticker, and you bring its insurance card.
- Red reflective GDL decals, if you are under 21. One goes on the upper left corner of the front plate and one on the upper left corner of the rear plate. Any MVC agency sells a new set for $4.00 (U.S. dollars, as of 2026).
- Form BA-CSD, if you got your permit before age 21. See the section on the form below.
- Your appointment. You must book the road test before you go.
Which car can you use for the NJ road test?
The MVC does not supply cars for road tests. Bring a registered car, or rent a car from a driving school. A car from a rental company works only if you are on the rental contract as an additional driver and you are of contract age. The examiner must be able to reach the foot brake or the parking brake from the passenger seat, so check that nothing blocks them.
Do I bring the BA-CSD form to the road test?
The BA-CSD (Certification of Supervised Driving) says that you drove at least 50 supervised hours, 10 of them in darkness. You need it if you got your permit before age 21 and on or after February 1, 2025. A parent, guardian or supervising driver signs it by hand. The driving log form in the Share the Keys guide does not count. A false form brings a six-month suspension.
The MVC first license page asks for the form at the time of licensure. The 2026 Driver Manual asks for it at the road test appointment. Bring it to both. The guide to the 50-hour rule has the details.
When can you take the NJ road test?
What skills are tested on the NJ road test?
- Starting the car
- Steering properly
- Driving in reverse
- Stopping smoothly
- Stopping at signs
- Nearing corners and intersections
- Following other vehicles
- Turning around
- Parallel parking
- Yielding the right-of-way
- Sitting properly, with your seat belt on
- Using the horn
How the NJ road test works on test day
A Safety Specialist (examiner) rides with you in an off-road test area or on a public road course. The test takes about 10 to 15 minutes. If your car has a manual transmission, the examiner asks you to show that you can shift gears correctly. If you pass, the examiner endorses your permit.
What makes the examiner reject your car?
- The examiner finds the car unsafe or unsuitable. Some applicants never start the test for this reason.
- An improper, expired or missing inspection sticker.
- No red GDL decals on the plates when the driver is under 21.
- Equipment that stops the examiner from reaching the foot brake or the parking brake.
- A self-parking car or an autocycle.
- A signal, brake light or windshield wiper that does not work. Try the free question on one dead brake light on test day.
- Poor brakes, a defective parking brake, unsafe tires, a very dirty interior, a fast engine idle or missing seat belts.
- A dashboard brake warning light that is on.
- Tint on the driver window or the front door windows.
What if you fail the NJ road test?
Wait at least 14 days before you take the road test again. Book the retest online or at any MVC Licensing Center. If your car stopped the test, fix the problem before you go back. Watch the date of your permit: you have 2 years from the permit to get your probationary license, or you must get a new permit.
Key takeaways
- Bring your 6 Points of ID (original paper documents), your validated permit and a New Jersey licensed driver who is 21 or older with at least three years of license. Book an appointment first.
- Bring a registered, inspected and insured car with working signals, brake lights and wipers. The MVC does not supply one.
- Under 21: red GDL decals on both plates. Permit issued before age 21 and on or after February 1, 2025: a signed BA-CSD form (50 hours, 10 in darkness).
- The test takes about 10 to 15 minutes. After a fail, wait at least 14 days.

NJ road test: common questions
Can I use a backup camera on the NJ road test?
Yes. Backup cameras and parking sensors that are installed in the car may be used during the road test. A car that parks itself is different: the MVC does not allow a self-parking vehicle for the test, so bring a car that you steer into the parking space yourself.
Can my parent ride in the back seat during the road test?
No. During the test, only the MVC examiner may be in the car, so no parent, friend or interpreter can ride along. Your licensed driver still matters before the test: a licensed driver must stay in the car with you whenever it moves, even in the road test line.
Can I practice on the road test course before my test?
No. The Driver Manual does not allow practice driving on the test course or in the parallel parking area. Practice parallel parking, turns and smooth stops on other streets with your supervising driver in the weeks before your appointment.
What happens after I pass the NJ road test?
The examiner endorses your permit. You can then get your probationary license at the road test site, if that site issues licenses, or at any MVC Licensing Center. Bring your stamped permit and your documents. A Licensing Center does not need an appointment for this visit.
Do adults over 21 need decals or the BA-CSD for the road test?
Usually not. Red GDL decals are for drivers under 21. The BA-CSD is not needed if you were 21 or older when your permit was issued. If you got the permit before age 21, on or after February 1, 2025, you must still bring the signed form, even if you are 21 or older now.
