Ohio Driving Test: What to Expect at the BMV (Driving and Maneuverability)

informational·how to guide·

Where the Ohio driving test facts come from

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), part of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, gives the test rules on its driver license page for new drivers. The test is booked on BMV Online Services. The driver training rule for people under 21 comes from Ohio Revised Code 4507.21. Ohio Revised Code 4507.11 sets the two test parts and the vehicle rule, and a 2024 Ohio Department of Public Safety resource sheet adds a note on language. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Ohio BMV (bmv.ohio.gov) before you drive.

The two parts of the Ohio driving test

The Ohio road test, also called the driving and skills test, has two parts: driving and maneuverability. You must pass both parts before you can buy your license. TIPIC is the temporary instruction permit identification card, the permit that many people call "temps".

What the driving part checks

  • Stop and start.
  • Turn around and back up.
  • Turns.
  • Turn signals. Practice the signal rule with this free question on how long to signal before a turn.
  • Driving in the correct lane.
  • A safe following distance.

The maneuverability part in short

The maneuverability part has two steps: forward through markers, then backwards through markers. For the forward step, you drive through a 9 foot by 20 foot box formed by four markers. If you run over or knock down a marker, or remove it from the test area, you fail at once. Stopping, bumping markers, a wrong stopping distance and not being parallel with the test area cost you points. The guide to the Ohio maneuverability test has the cone steps and the scoring.

Ohio driving test: common questions

Can I schedule the Ohio driving test by email?

No. The BMV does not schedule tests by email. Use BMV Online Services, select the "Schedule a Driving or Skills Test" tile and choose the in-person Operator Driving Test. Book the test after you meet every requirement, driver training included.

How long do I have to buy my license after I pass the Ohio driving test?

You have 60 days from the day you pass. At a deputy registrar license agency, you surrender your TIPIC and bring documents that prove your name, date of birth, Social Security number (if assigned), Ohio residency and citizenship or legal presence. Under 18 and not emancipated, the responsible person who co-signs must come with you and show a driver license or ID card.

Do I need driver's ed before the driving test if I am 19?

Yes. At 18 to 20, you first complete a Class D driver education class at a licensed driver training school: 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of driving. Then you log 50 hours of practice with an eligible adult, 10 at night, on the BMV 5791. Bring a copy of your Driver Education Certificate to the test.

Who can ride with me while I practice as an adult?

With a TIPIC, you practice only with a licensed driver age 21 or older, so a licensed friend who is 20 does not qualify. The same rule applies if you hold a driver license from another country and have an Ohio TIPIC.

Can I use any car for the Ohio driving test?

No. The vehicle must be in good condition, and the BMV inspects it before the test begins. Ohio law also does not allow a low-speed or under-speed vehicle or a mini-truck for the test. At 18 to 20, the BMV asks you to bring the vehicle with its license plate, make and model.
