Two road tests, and which fee pays for each

To get a full G licence, you must pass two road tests: the G2 road test and then the G road test. The G1 package already pays for your first road test, the G2 road test. The G road test fee is separate. You have up to five years to finish all the steps. See how long you must wait before the G2 road test.

Example: the G1 package plus the G road test, in CAD

  • You pass the knowledge test and both road tests on the first try: CAD 159.75 (G1 package) + CAD 91.25 (G road test) = CAD 251.00.
  • You fail the knowledge test twice before you pass it, then pass both road tests on the first try: CAD 159.75 + 2 × CAD 16.00 + CAD 91.25 = CAD 283.00.
  • A road test retest adds an extra charge to either total.

How you can pay DriveTest fees

  • Cash
  • Credit card (VISA or MasterCard)
  • Debit card
  • Certified business cheque or certified personal cheque
  • Bank draft or money order, made payable to Serco Canada Inc.
  • Travellers cheque, Canadian or American
  • Bring the fee with you on the day of the knowledge test. The guide to what to bring to the G1 test lists the ID and other items.

How road test fees work

You prepay the road test fee when you book the appointment. Cancel at least 48 hours ahead. If you cancel or reschedule with less notice, or you do not attend, the prepaid fee is not refunded. Only in certain extenuating circumstances, such as a death in your immediate family, does the fee stay as a credit on your driving record. DriveTest explains its payment, cancellation and refund rules on its Payments, Cancellations, and Refunds page.

How much does the official MTO Driver's Handbook cost?

The ontario.ca page, updated September 11, 2026, lists the Official MTO Driver's Handbook at CAD 14.95 plus taxes. The older DriveTest fee table, effective July 12, 2019, lists it at CAD 18.00, cash only. You can buy a hard copy at a DriveTest centre or in many retail stores, and you can also read the handbook online.

Key takeaways

Ontario G1 test fees: common questions

Can I rewrite the G1 test on the same day if I fail?

Yes. If you fail the knowledge test, you can rewrite it on the same day without a new appointment. You pay CAD 16.00 for each extra attempt. For a rewrite on another day, ask the DriveTest Centre whether you need an appointment. See how a G1 retake works.

Does a G1 test with an interpreter cost extra?

If you bring an interpreter, you book a verbal knowledge test. There is no extra fee for it. You pay any expenses linked to your foreign-language interpreter, on top of the G1 package.

Is there a fee to book a road test, or can a website charge one?

No. The Ministry of Transportation and DriveTest do not charge fees to book road tests. You prepay the road test fee itself. A G1 knowledge test needs no appointment. Compare any price you see with the fees posted on drivetest.ca.

What happens to my road test fee if my car does not meet the Ministry's standards?

The examiner declares the road test out-of-order. You lose 50% of the road test fee. The other 50% stays as a credit on your driving record. To book a new road test, you pay the deducted 50% again.

I have a driver's licence from another country. What do I pay in Ontario?

If your licence is from a place that has an exchange agreement with Ontario, the fee is CAD 90.00, the same as the five-year licence fee. If there is no agreement, you apply for a G1 and pay the applicable fees. Check the list of places in the guide to licence exchange countries.
