Oregon Driving Test (DMV Drive Test): Booking, Car Check and Retakes

informational·how to guide·

Where the Oregon drive test facts come from

The test steps, the car check, the skills and the $45 and $64 fees come from the Oregon DMV page on what to expect on your drive test. The testing business rules come from the Oregon DMV Class C testing business page. The retake rule, the weapon rule and the testing business schedules come from the 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual. The rental car rule and the role of the examiner come from the Oregon DMV license page for drivers 18 and older. The teen and waiver rules come from the Oregon DMV teen license page, the ODOT Transportation Safety Office driver education page, ORS 807.065 and ORS 807.072. The rural priority comes from ORS 807.073 (SB 9), and the end of the one-month teen wait comes from SB 840 (Oregon Laws 2025). This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Oregon DMV (oregon.gov/odot/dmv) before you drive.

Who can take the Oregon drive test?

You must be 16 or older. If you are under 18, you must have held an instruction permit for at least six months. Pass the knowledge test first, and book an appointment, because drive tests are by appointment only. Your driving privileges cannot be suspended or revoked, and you cannot be in the At-Risk Driver Program. If you must have an ignition interlock device, take the test in a car that has one. Class C testing businesses test only non-commercial Class C applicants.

How to get ready for your Oregon drive test

  1. 1
Choose DMV or a testing business

Use the table above. For DMV, schedule on DMV2U. For a testing business, contact the business directly. Your DMV customer number is near the top of your instruction permit or ID card.

  2. 2
    Get your car ready

Use a passenger vehicle with current registration and valid proof of insurance. A photocopy or an electronic insurance card is acceptable. Remove weapons from the car, and check the equipment in the list below.

  3. 3
Bring your papers and your payment

Bring proof of identity, date of birth and full legal name. If your address is not on those documents, bring another document that shows it. Pay test fees in advance, and bring a separate payment for the license issuance fee ($64 for a Class C license).

  4. 4
    Practice the skills

Study the Oregon Driver Manual. Then practice the skills in the section below until you are comfortable on residential streets and in city traffic.

What does the examiner check on your car?

  • Turn signal lights (front and back), brake lights, rearview mirror, seat belts, muffler, foot brake (or hand brake as needed), horn and tires.
  • Valid license plates on the front and the back of the car.
  • The inside and outside door handle on the passenger door, and a proper passenger seat next to the driver.
  • Headlights, tail lights, windshield wipers and defroster, if the weather or light requires them.
  • Turn off all audio systems, GPS devices and cell phones, and take objects off the dashboard and the rearview mirror.

What driving skills does the Oregon drive test cover?

The test covers turning, backing up, parking, lane changes, speed control, signaling, vehicle control and general driving ability. Try our free question on which tasks an Oregon examiner checks.
Signal for all turns and lane changes, and turn your head to check the blind spot before a lane change. Drive at about the speed of other traffic, but not above the speed limit. At an uncontrolled intersection there are no signs, so use judgment and be ready to yield.
When you back up, turn your head to look behind and beside you, and only glance at mirrors or a backup camera. See our free question on backing out safely.

What if you fail the Oregon drive test?

You fail the drive test
Wait until the next business day before you take it again. DMV charges the test fee each time, so pay $45 again for a DMV retest. A testing business sets its own fees.
You are under 18
The next business day rule applies to you too. SB 840 removed the old one-month wait for teens on January 1, 2026.
The car fails the equipment check or will not start
The test is canceled and you must reschedule. A jump start or a push is not allowed.

Can you skip the Oregon drive test?

First, DMV may waive it if you pass an ODOT-approved driver education course before age 18. The waiver lasts two years, and for courses passed on or after October 14, 2024, the provider tells DMV electronically. Adults who took a course should ask DMV. A teen with the course needs 50 supervised hours; without it, 100. See driver ed or 100 hours in Oregon.
Second, DMV may waive it if you are new to Oregon and surrender a license from another U.S. state or another place on the DMV list, expired not more than one year. Confirm the list with DMV, and see our guide to moving to Oregon.

What happens after you pass the Oregon drive test?

With a DMV test, you also pass a vision test at the same office. After you pass the drive test, you pay the fee and have your photo taken. If you passed with a testing business, make an appointment or go to a DMV office for standby service to get your license. There, show proof of address and identity, pass the vision test, pay the fee and have your photo taken.

Key takeaways

  • The Oregon drive test takes about 20 minutes. Only you and the examiner are in the car.
  • Book a DMV test ($45) on DMV2U about three to four weeks ahead, or contact a Class C testing business, which sets its own fees and days.
  • The examiner checks your car first. Bring registration, proof of insurance and proof of identity, and remove weapons from the car.
  • If you fail, wait until the next business day. Teens no longer wait one month.
  • Next step: practice on the free Oregon Class C passenger permit practice test.

Oregon drive test: common questions

Can a parent or a translator ride with me on the Oregon drive test?

No. Only you and the examiner may be in the vehicle during the test, at DMV and at a testing business. Translators, family, friends and pets are not allowed. The examiner sits in the front seat and gives you directions during the drive.

Will the examiner try to trick me on the drive test?

No. Oregon DMV says the examiner will not ask you to do anything illegal or try to trick you. The examiner also will not tell you when to change lanes to get ready for a turn, so plan your lane early. After the test, the examiner discusses the results with you.

What mistakes should I avoid on the Oregon drive test?

Oregon DMV says other drivers should not have to swerve or stop suddenly because of your mistakes. For every turn, be in the correct lane and drive at the proper speed, and know the laws about turns on red lights and turns from and onto one-way streets. When the examiner asks you to back up, you should be able to do it on the first try.

Can I take the Oregon drive test in a rental car?

Yes. The car needs current registration and valid proof of insurance. If you are named on the rental agreement, the insurance may come through the rental agency, or you can get your own policy for the car. If you are not named on the agreement, bring a letter from the rental agency that extends its insurance coverage to you.

Do rural Oregon residents get priority for a drive test?

Yes, at rural DMV offices. A 2025 law (SB 9), in effect since January 1, 2026, tells DMV field offices in 20 rural counties, such as Baker, Klamath, Umatilla and Wasco, to put first the drive test requests of people who live in the same county, within 50 miles of the office, or in a county with no field office.
