Oregon Online Knowledge Test: How to Take the Permit Test at Home

informational·how to guide·

Where these Oregon online test facts come from

The online test rules, proctor rules, retake limits and fee come from the Oregon DMV online knowledge testing page. The pass mark, the webcam photos and the manual's proctor limit come from the 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual. The eight languages and the steps after you pass come from the November 2024 ODOT news release. The office test limit, the proctor definition and the permit fee come from the September 2025 ODOT news release, OAR 735-062-0002 and the DMV permit and fee pages. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Oregon DMV (oregon.gov/odot/dmv) before you drive.

Who can be the proctor for an under-18 test?

The proctor does not need to be your parent or guardian. The DMV online testing page lists three requirements: the proctor is 21 years of age, has a Social Security number and has not proctored more than five DMV tests in the past 12 months. The Oregon Driver Manual adds that a proctor can supervise only two tests in a 24-hour period. The DMV rule OAR 735-062-0002 defines a proctor as a caregiver of the applicant who is at least 21 and whose identity is verified. Pick an adult who fits each of these descriptions.

How to take the Oregon knowledge test at home

  1. 1
Make sure you need the test

If you already hold a valid driver license or motorcycle endorsement, you are likely not required to take it. Not sure? Check your DMV profile on DMV2U.

  2. 2
Get your device and proctor ready

Use a desktop or laptop with a mouse, keyboard and webcam. Have your Social Security number ready. If you are under 18, have your proctor ready with their Social Security number too.

  3. 3
    Start from the DMV site

Go to the Oregon DMV online knowledge testing page, part of DMV2U. The test button takes you to a trusted partner site. The vendor, Intellectual Technology Inc., runs the test.

  4. 4
    Take the test

Answer the 35 multiple-choice questions on your own. If you are under 18, your proctor watches you complete the test.

  5. 5
Get your result before you go to DMV

You know if you passed before you visit a DMV office. If you did not pass, you save a trip. If you passed, follow the steps after a pass below.

How many questions, how many correct, and which languages?

The test has 35 multiple-choice questions, and the Oregon Driver Manual says you must answer 28 correctly to pass. Our free question on how many questions the Oregon knowledge test has and our free question on a 27 out of 35 result let you check these numbers. Our practice questions are in English only.
You can read and hear the Class C test in eight languages, online and in DMV offices: Arabic, Chinese (simplified Mandarin), English, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese. DMV added six of them in November 2024.

What happens if you fail the online test?

You can take an online knowledge test only twice in any 24-hour period, and you pay $7 each time. You can take each type of knowledge test four times online. After that, you must test at a DMV office. Since October 1, 2025, a DMV office also limits you to two Class C knowledge tests in 24 hours, the same limit as online.
For the full rules on the test itself, see our guide to the Oregon DMV knowledge test.

What to do after you pass the Oregon online knowledge test

  1. 1
    Go to a DMV office

You do not need an appointment, but bring all your identity documents. You do not need your Social Security card. DMV asks for your number, or your statement that you have none.

  2. 2
    Pass the vision screening

There is no fee for the vision test.

  3. 3
Get your permit or book the drive test

Depending on your age, DMV issues the instruction permit or you can schedule a drive test. The Class C instruction permit costs $30 and is valid for 2 years.

  4. 4
Bring a parent if you are under 18

Teens 15 to 17 need a parent or legal guardian to sign for the Provisional Instruction Permit at the DMV office. Our guide to Oregon instruction permit rules covers supervised practice.

Rules and risks of the online test

  • Do not use the Oregon Driver Manual, other electronic devices or notes during the test.
  • Do not let another person take the test for you. It is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by jail time, a fine or both, and DMV will suspend your driving privileges or your right to apply for one year.
  • Do not take the test out of curiosity if you hold a valid license. A fail may suspend your driving privileges. Use the DMV practice test instead, which does not affect your driving record.

Oregon online knowledge test: common questions

Can I take the Oregon permit test on my phone?

Can I take the Oregon motorcycle knowledge test online?

Yes. DMV offers the motorcycle endorsement knowledge test online too, but you must already hold an Oregon driver license or permit.
