informational·how to guide·

Where the Oregon knowledge test facts come from

The question count, the pass mark and the office test rules come from the 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual. The fee and the list of people who must test come from the Oregon DMV driver license page. The online rules and the eight languages come from the Oregon DMV online knowledge testing page, ODOT news releases of November 2024 and September 2025, and the DMV Quick Tips for Teens page. The required topics come from Oregon law (ORS 807.070), and the proctor definition from the DMV rule OAR 735-062-0002. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Oregon DMV (oregon.gov/odot/dmv) before you drive.

What is on the Oregon DMV knowledge test?

The test covers road signs, traffic laws and other information a driver needs to know. The 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual has all the information you need to pass.
Under Oregon law, the test may not cover a subject that is missing from DMV study publications. It must include the meaning of official traffic signs and signals, the rights of blind pedestrians, correct steps in an emergency, and safe driving around pedestrians and bicyclists. It must have at least two questions about safe driving around motorcyclists.

You can take the test with or without audio help, so you can listen to each question as you read it. Our free practice tests are in English only.

How much does the test cost, and how many times can you retake it?

The fee is $7 each time you take the test, online or in a DMV office. You pay before every test, and again for each retake.
Since October 1, 2025, you can take at most two Class C knowledge tests in 24 hours in a DMV office. DMV set the limit because some people took the test 10 or more times a day. Online, you can also test twice in 24 hours, and four times in total. After that, you must test at a DMV office. So if you fail, you can try one more time within the same 24 hours.

Rules for the test in a DMV office

  • You take the test on a touch-screen computer with audio. You may bring your own earbuds or headphones.
  • You may not use phones or other electronic or smart devices, books, manuals or notes, and you may not talk during the test.
  • With permission, you may use a paper foreign language translation dictionary.
  • For a first license or permit, DMV also tests your vision. There is no fee for the vision test.

Online or in an office: which should you choose?

You have a desktop or laptop with a keyboard, mouse and webcam
You can test online at any time. Phones and tablets do not work. You need a valid Social Security number. After you pass, you still visit a DMV office with your identity documents and pass a vision screening. See our guide to the Oregon online knowledge test.
You are under 18 and test online
A proctor who is at least 21 and has a valid Social Security number must watch you. The DMV rule calls the proctor a caregiver: a person with some responsibility for your safety and well-being. The DMV online testing page says the proctor does not have to be a parent or guardian.
You have no computer, no webcam or no Social Security number
Test in a DMV office, with an appointment or as standby.

Oregon knowledge test: common questions

How late can I take the Oregon permit test at a DMV office?

DMV offices stop giving the knowledge test 1 hour before closing. Most offices also stop testing 1 hour before lunch. Testing hours differ by office, so check the page of your local DMV office before you go. If you test online instead, you can take the test at any time of day.

What should I bring to the DMV office for the knowledge test?

Bring the $7 test fee and proof of your identity, date of birth and current residence address. DMV asks for these each time you take a test, also for a retake. If you are under 18, your parent or legal guardian must also sign at DMV before you get a permit.

Can I bring a translator or get help with the Oregon knowledge test?

Yes, within limits. An authorized translator may be in the testing area with you. The test can also read each question aloud in 8 languages. If you need a special accommodation, contact your local DMV office before your test. No other person may be in the testing area.

What counts as cheating on the Oregon knowledge test?

Talking, writing or note taking, cell phone use, use of any electronic device, and letting someone else take the test for you all count as cheating. If you cheat, you fail, and you cannot test again for 90 days. If another person takes the test for you, DMV suspends your driving privileges, or your right to apply, for a year.

Can I take the Oregon knowledge test just to check what I know?

DMV warns against it if you already have a valid license. DMV says you are likely not required to take it, and your driving privileges may be suspended if you take it out of curiosity and fail. Use the DMV online practice test instead, because it does not affect your driving record.
