Pennsylvania Permit Test: Questions, Passing Score, Retakes
How many questions are on the Pennsylvania permit test, and how many must you get right?
The Pennsylvania learner's permit knowledge test has 18 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer 15 correctly to pass. That means you can miss 3. PennDOT says the test covers traffic signs, Pennsylvania driving laws and safe-driving practices. You need no appointment: go to a Driver License Center. If you fail, you can retake it the next business day.
Where these Pennsylvania permit test rules come from
The rules come from the PennDOT online Driver's Manual chapter on tests, the PennDOT test scheduling FAQs and PennDOT's remote learner's permit testing pilot article. The pass mark also matches 67 Pa. Code section 75.5, and the topics match Title 75, section 1508. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with PennDOT Driver and Vehicle Services (pa.gov/dmv) before you drive.
How does the 15 of 18 passing score work?
You must answer 15 of the 18 questions correctly. Three wrong answers still pass; a fourth wrong answer is a fail. Pennsylvania's regulation (67 Pa. Code section 75.5) says that an applicant who answers 80 percent or more of the questions correctly passes, and 15 of 18 (about 83 percent) is above that line. You must pass this test before you can receive a valid learner's permit. The free question page on the Pennsylvania knowledge test score shows the score rule in a short example.
What does the Pennsylvania permit test cover?
- Traffic signs. The test measures your knowledge of traffic signs.
- Pennsylvania driving laws. The questions cover the laws and driving rules in the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95).
- Safe-driving practices. State law requires the exam to test safe driving practices and Pennsylvania traffic laws.
- Distracted driving. The traffic-law part of the exam must include at least one question on distracted driving.
- Sample questions. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 of the manual contain sample test questions and answers, and PennDOT offers practice apps.
Which languages can you take the test in?
PennDOT says the knowledge test is given in written and audio format, on request, at all Driver License Centers. The online manual lists 30 languages: Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Bosnian, Burmese, Cambodian, Dari, English, Farsi, French, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Mandinka, Nepali, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu and Vietnamese. For other language help, the PennDOT language assistance line is 717-412-5300. Our own practice tests and question pages are free, but they are in English only.
What to do on the day of the test
- 1Go to a Driver License Center
You cannot apply for the permit before your 16th birthday. You do not need an appointment for the knowledge test: go to your nearest Driver License Center.
- 2Bring your forms and original documents
Bring your completed DL-180 application and your signed Social Security card. If you are under 18, also bring the parent or guardian consent form, DL-180TD. Your proof of date of birth and identification must be originals, because photocopies are not accepted.
- 3Plan how you will pay
Driver License Centers take debit or credit cards, checks or money orders, but no cash. The guide to what the permit costs gives the fee.
- 4Take the 18-question test
The test has 18 multiple-choice questions. If you need a language other than English, ask for it at the center.
- 5Get your permit if you pass
You need 15 correct answers. The examiner then gives you a learner's permit that is valid for one year.
What happens if you fail the knowledge test?
Knowledge test and road test: do not mix up the rules
| Rule | Knowledge test | Road test |
|---|---|---|
| Appointment | No appointment needed | Appointment needed |
| Tries | One time on any day, at any location | Three chances with each learner's permit |
| Wait after a fail | Retake the following business day | Under 18: wait seven days |
Can you take the Pennsylvania permit test online?
No. There is no online test that you can take at home. Since November 2025, PennDOT has run a two-year pilot that lets students take the knowledge test at school, only at Williamson and Cowanesque Valley high schools in the Northern Tioga School District. PennDOT-approved teachers run it. A student who passes still goes to a Driver License Center with the results, the documents and the application, pays the fee and receives the permit. A student who fails can retake the test at school another day.

Pennsylvania permit test: common questions
Can I take the Pennsylvania permit test in Spanish?
Yes. Spanish is one of the 30 languages that PennDOT lists for the knowledge test. You ask for it at the Driver License Center, and the test is given in written and audio format. Our free practice tests are in English only.
Do I need an appointment for the Pennsylvania permit test?
No. You do not need an appointment for the knowledge test. Just go to your nearest Driver License Center with your forms, your original documents and a way to pay other than cash. The road test is different: it needs an appointment.
Is there an eye test when I take the permit test?
It depends. Your health care provider completes the back of the DL-180 form. If your provider or an optometrist did not test your vision, the Driver License Center tests it. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them with you on test day.
Are there practice tests from PennDOT?
Yes. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 of the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95) contain sample test questions and answers, and chapter 2 covers signs, signals and pavement markings. PennDOT also offers practice apps for the knowledge test.
Is the permit test the same as the road test?
No. The permit test is the 18-question knowledge test that you take to get your learner's permit. The road test is the driving test that you take later, and you must pass the knowledge test first. The Pennsylvania road test guide covers its own rules.
