How to Get Your Class 7 Learner's Licence in Saskatchewan (2026 Steps)
How do you get a Class 7 learner's licence in Saskatchewan?
You must be 16, or 15 if you are in or have finished high school driver education. If you are under 18 and new to driving, a parent or guardian signs the SGI Signature/Guarantor Form. At a motor licence issuer, you pass the vision test and the Basic and Sign written exams, then buy the licence. Then you practise for nine months with a supervising driver.
Where the Class 7 licence rules come from
The rules come from the SGI Graduated Driver Licensing page, The Driver Licensing and Suspension Regulations, 2006 and the SGI Signature/Guarantor Form for first-time drivers. Exam, identification and supervisor details also come from the SGI Driver's Handbook (2026-27), other SGI Driver's Handbook pages, the SGI Co-pilot's Manual and The Traffic Safety Act. The exam fee comes from The Traffic Safety Act Fees Regulations. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with SGI (sgi.sk.ca) before you drive.
How old must you be for a Class 7 licence in Saskatchewan?
You must be 16. You can apply at 15 if you are enrolled in, or have finished, a high school driver education program under the Government of Saskatchewan. At 15, you also fill in the high school driver education declaration on the SGI Signature/Guarantor Form. A licence held at 15 stays valid only while you are enrolled or registered in the program, or after you finish it.
Steps to get your Class 7 licence
- 1Get the Signature/Guarantor Form signed
If you are under 18 and have never held a driver's licence, a parent or guardian signs the SGI form. You can get it at your high school or on the SGI website.
- 2Book your written exams
Call or visit a motor licence issuer, or book online with MySGI.
- 3Bring your identification and the form
Bring proof of age (a birth certificate, a passport or another document SGI accepts) and several pieces of original identification. Photocopies are not accepted. You also need a signature from a Saskatchewan Health card, a passport, a Canadian driver's licence or another document SGI accepts. No licence is issued unless you hand in the signed form when you apply.
- 4Pass the vision test and the written exams
Class 7 has two knowledge tests, the Basic exam and the Sign exam. As of 2026, each sitting costs $25, however many exams you write in it (The Traffic Safety Act Fees Regulations). If you fail one exam, you rewrite only that one. You may write only once per day, and passing results are valid for one year.
- 5Buy your licence
You buy the licence at the motor licence issuer. You get a temporary paper licence until the licence card arrives in the mail.
Can you write the Class 7 exams online or without an appointment?
Walk-in written tests are available in Regina and Saskatoon, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday. In other places, book an appointment with a motor licence issuer or on MySGI. If you are enrolled in the High School Driver Education Program, you write your exam online with a free MySGI account. Any motor licence issuer can set up the account, and you show your ID to do it. The Class 7 written test guide explains the Basic and Sign exams in more detail.
Does a parent have to sign for a Class 7 licence?
Yes, if you are under 18 and have never held a driver's licence. The regulations ask for the written consent of one parent, and SGI's form accepts a parent or guardian. SGI asks first-time drivers aged 15 to 18 to bring the completed form. A parent or guardian who feels the teen is not ready to drive can withhold consent. Once consent is given, it cannot be withdrawn.

Who can supervise a Class 7 driver, and who can ride along?
By law, you may not drive on a public road unless a qualified supervisor is with you. The supervisor must hold a valid Class 1 to 5 licence, or a Canadian or U.S. licence equal to Class 5 or higher, held for at least 365 days in the last three years. A Novice 1 or Novice 2 driver cannot supervise. The supervisor sits in the seat nearest to you and the vehicle controls. From midnight to 5 a.m., carry only immediate family. With a rear seat, only the supervisor sits in front. Never carry more passengers than seat belts. The Class 7 learner rules guide has the full list.
How long do you stay on a Class 7 learner's licence?
You must keep a Class 7 for at least nine months before any exam for another class. The regulations count at least 274 days with a valid Class 7 before you apply for Class 5 with a Novice 1 restriction. Days when your licence is suspended, or when you hold no valid licence, do not count. You also need driver education: the high school program, or at least 6 hours in class and 6 hours in the car with an SGI-certified instructor (age 16 and up). Then you pass the Class 5 road test and drive as a Novice 1 driver for six months.
What a Class 7 licence does not allow
- No cellphone use while driving, hand-held or hands-free. This applies to every driver in Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL).
- No alcohol: new drivers face zero tolerance for alcohol, and all drivers face zero tolerance for drugs.
- No right-hand drive vehicles.
- No motorcycle endorsement and no three-wheeled vehicles as a learner. The free question on what a Class 7 licence permits checks what a learner may drive.
- An at-fault collision, a traffic conviction or a suspension puts you in the GDL Improvement Program.

Saskatchewan learner's licence: common questions
What happens if I need glasses to pass the vision test?
You get a restricted licence. It is valid only when you wear your prescribed glasses or contact lenses. If you do not meet the vision standards, you may be referred to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for more tests. The free question on the vision test restriction covers this rule.
I am 15 and on a waiting list for driver education. Can I still write the exam?
Yes, if you are registered in a certified High School Driver Education Program. Bring a copy of the Signature/Guarantor Form that confirms you are enrolled or intend to enrol in a driver education program. You can get the form at your high school or on the SGI website.
Does my parent have to come with me to the motor licence issuer?
Only in one case. If you are under 18 and have no identification with your own signature on it, a parent or guardian must come with you and show photo identification. In other cases, you bring the form that your parent or guardian already signed.
Can I drive alone once I have my temporary paper licence?
No. The paper licence is your Class 7 learner's licence, so a qualified supervisor must be with you each time you drive. Before you can drive alone, you must pass the Class 5 road test and upgrade your licence at a motor licence issuer.
Can I ride an ATV or snowmobile with a Class 7 licence?
Yes, with a condition. A person with a Class 1 to 5 licence must go with you, or supervise you from another machine. That person must stay within 5 metres of you and keep you in view. On a snowmobile, a Novice 1 or Novice 2 driver cannot be that person. SGI also says that all snowmobile operators born after January 1, 1989, must take an approved safety course.
