SGI Written Test (Class 7): Basic and Sign Exams, Pass Mark and Languages

informational·how to guide·

Where these facts come from

SGI (Saskatchewan Government Insurance) runs the written test. This guide uses the online Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook (2026-27 edition), The Driver Licensing and Suspension Regulations, 2006, and The Traffic Safety Act Fees Regulations. The 80% passing grade comes from SGI's Motorcycle Handbook, and the question counts come from SGI's Professional Driver's Handbook (revised 2024). The facts are as of 2026. Confirm the rules with SGI (sgi.sk.ca) before you drive.

The SGI Basic exam, Sign exam and vision test

For a Class 7 learner's licence, you write two knowledge tests: the Basic exam and the Sign exam. The Basic exam covers driving situations and the rules of the road in the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook. The Sign exam covers what traffic signs mean. A Class 5 applicant writes the same two exams. You also take a vision test, which may check your field of vision, your visual acuity and how you judge distance. The Driver Licensing and Suspension Regulations, 2006 require a Class 7 applicant to pass the vision, sign, and written or oral tests set for that licence.

How to study for the Basic and Sign exams

Both exams test what is in the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook (2026-27), so study the whole handbook, not only the sign pages. Each exam has its own 80% passing grade, so a strong Sign score does not make up for a weak Basic score. The printed handbook is accurate as of September 2025, so use the online version at sgi.sk.ca/handbook for the newest rules.

What if you fail one part of the written test?

You pass the Sign exam but fail the Basic exam
Rewrite only the Basic exam. The question on which exam to rewrite tests this rule.
You fail both exams
Rewrite both on another day, because you can write only once a day. Under The Traffic Safety Act Fees Regulations, one sitting costs $25 CAD however many exams you write in it. See SGI test fees and retakes for the other fees.
You pass both exams
Your results are valid for one year. Buy your Class 7 licence at a motor licence issuer. You get a temporary paper licence until your new licence card comes in the mail.

SGI written test languages and the oral exam

The Basic knowledge exam, on a computer or on paper, has translation for over 100 languages, as stated in SGI's Motorcycle Handbook. Ask SGI before your visit whether your language is offered. If you cannot complete a written exam, you can take an oral exam for an extra $85 CAD, as set in The Traffic Safety Act Fees Regulations. Road tests are in English. Our free practice tests and question pages are in English only.

Can you take the SGI written test online?

Most people write the test in person at an SGI driver exam office. Students in the High School Driver Education Program are the exception: they write the exam online through a free MySGI account. Any SGI motor licence issuer can set up that account, and you show your ID to do it. Other learners can book a written appointment with MySGI.

Booking, ID and test-day rules for the SGI written test

  • Regina and Saskatoon: walk in without an appointment, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday. There are no tests on Saturdays of long weekends.
  • Everywhere else: book an appointment with MySGI, or call or visit a motor licence issuer.
  • Bring several pieces of original ID. Photocopies are not accepted, and first-time drivers aged 15 to 18 also need the Signature/Guarantor Form. The guide on what to bring to the SGI written test has the details.
  • Cellphones and other electronic devices are not allowed in the test area.
  • If you need glasses or contact lenses to pass the vision test, you get a restricted licence that is valid only while you wear them, as the vision test restriction question shows.

Key takeaways

  • The SGI Class 7 written test has two exams: Basic (driving situations and rules of the road) and Sign (sign identification).
  • SGI's Motorcycle Handbook lists an 80% passing grade for each exam.
  • Fail one exam and you rewrite only that one, once per day at most. A pass stays valid for one year.
  • Students in the High School Driver Education Program can write online through MySGI. Everyone else writes at an SGI driver exam office.
  • Next step: practise on the free Saskatchewan Class 7 practice test.

Frequently asked questions

Does SGI have its own practice test?

Yes. SGI posts practice test questions at sgi.sk.ca/quiz, and the online Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook at sgi.sk.ca/handbook has helpful animations. Both SGI exams test what is in that handbook, so read it first and then use practice questions to find the topics you need to study again.

Can the examiner help me if I do not understand a question?

Yes. If you are unsure what a question means, ask the examiner to help you. You cannot use a cellphone or any other electronic device in the test area, so a translation app is not an option.

What happens if I miss my written test appointment?

If you do not cancel and do not show up, you must pay for the rescheduled appointment. To avoid the extra cost, cancel ahead of time. In Regina and Saskatoon you can also walk in without an appointment, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

When can I take the road test after I pass the written test?

Not right away. You must hold your Class 7 licence for at least nine months before you can take any exam toward another class. In that time, practise with a supervising driver and complete mandatory driver education with an SGI-certified instructor. Then you can take the Class 5 road test.
