SGI Test Fees 2026: Written Test, Road Test, Licence and the 2027 Fee

informational·how to guide·

Where these fees come from

The test and licence fees are set in The Traffic Safety Act Fees Regulations (King's Printer copy of May 2024). The 2027 fee comes from SR 68/2026, The Traffic Safety Act Fees Amendment Regulations, 2026, filed October 1, 2026 and printed in The Saskatchewan Gazette of October 9, 2026. The retake and booking rules come from the Your test, Before the examination and Preparing for your road test pages of the online SGI Driver's Handbook; the language fact comes from the SGI Motorcycle Handbook. All amounts are in Canadian dollars, as of 2026. Confirm the rules with SGI (sgi.sk.ca) before you drive.

How much is the SGI written test?

The written test costs $25 for each sitting. The knowledge test has two parts: the Basic exam (driving situations and rules of the road) and the Sign exam (sign identification). If you write both exams in the same sitting, you pay $25 in total, not $25 for each exam. A person who cannot complete a written exam can take an oral exam, which costs $85 on top of the other fees. Our guide to the Class 7 written test covers the two exams in more detail.

How much is the Class 5 road test?

The Class 5 road test costs $55. You pay a test fee before each road test, so a second attempt costs another $55. If you have not paid the fee when you arrive, the test is rescheduled. You also supply the vehicle for the test, and it must be the right class for the licence. Our Class 5 road test guide explains how to book and what the examiner checks.

SGI driver's licence fee: $100 or $125 for five years

You pay the full fee when SGI issues your five-year driver's licence
The fee is $100.
You pay in annual instalments
The fee is $125, paid as annual instalments of $25. SGI sets the date each instalment is due.
SGI issues a licence for less than five years
The fee is cut in proportion to the months of the licence, out of 60 months.

The new $15 SGI fee from January 1, 2027

SR 68/2026 adds a $15 administrative fee to a five-year driver's licence whose term starts on or after January 1, 2027. You pay it when you apply, with either payment option. The $100 and $125 licence fees stay the same. On the instalment plan, a $2 administrative fee is also added to each annual instalment except the first. SGI may waive these fees if it considers that appropriate. The same regulation adds a $15 fee when a new owner registers a vehicle and a $5 fee on a registration renewal, for registration terms that start on or after January 1, 2027.

Retakes: what you pay and how long you wait

You fail one part of the written test
You rewrite only the exam you failed. The new sitting costs $25, and you can write only once per day.
You fail the Class 5 road test
You wait two weeks before you are eligible for another road test, and you pay the test fee again. SGI may also recommend more training or set a longer learning period.
You do not cancel your appointment and do not show up
You must pay for your rescheduled appointment.

SGI booking and retake rules that affect what you pay

  • A passed written exam result stays valid for one year. The practice question on which exam to rewrite tests this rule.
  • Written tests are walk-in in Regina and Saskatoon, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday. For a written test elsewhere or a Class 5 road test, book at a motor licence issuer or online with MySGI.
  • A road test is also rescheduled if you are late, do not have the right licence, or have not held a Class 7 licence for at least nine months.
  • After you pass the road test, the result stays valid for 12 months, but you must upgrade your licence at a motor licence issuer before you can drive alone.

Key takeaways

  • The written test costs $25 per sitting, and one sitting can cover both the Basic and Sign exams.
  • The Class 5 road test costs $55, and you pay the fee again before each new road test.
  • A five-year driver's licence costs $100 paid in full or $125 in $25 annual instalments, plus a $15 administrative fee when the licence term starts on or after January 1, 2027.
  • After a failed Class 5 road test, wait two weeks. After a failed written exam, rewrite only the exam you failed.
  • Next step: practise with the free Saskatchewan Class 7 practice test before you pay for your written test sitting.

SGI test fees: common questions

Do I pay again if I fail the SGI written test?

Yes. Each new sitting costs $25. If you pass one exam and fail the other, you rewrite only the exam you failed, and your passed result stays valid for one year. You can write only once per day, so the earliest retake is the next day.

Will I pay the new $15 fee if I renew my licence in December 2026?

It depends on the start date of the new licence term, not on the day you apply. If the term of your five-year driver's licence starts on or after January 1, 2027, you pay the $15 administrative fee when you apply. SGI may waive it if it considers that appropriate.

What happens if I miss my SGI road test?

If you do not cancel your appointment and do not show up, you must pay for the rescheduled appointment, which is $55 for a Class 5 road test. A road test is also rescheduled if you are late or have not paid the exam fee.

Does a commercial road test cost more in Saskatchewan?

Yes. A road test for a Class 1, 2 or 3 licence costs $100, compared with $55 for a Class 4 or 5 licence. You pay the fee before each road test, and you supply a vehicle of the right class for the licence.

Can I take the SGI written test in another language?

The Basic exam has translation for over 100 languages, so ask SGI about your language before you book. If you cannot complete a written exam, an oral exam costs $85 more. Road tests are in English. Our free practice test is in English only.
