ITTD and ITAD in Texas: The Certificate Before the Driving Test
What are ITTD and ITAD, and who needs which?
Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) is a 2-hour online video for drivers aged 15 to 17 in an approved parent-taught or minor driver education course. Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) is a 1-hour video for ages 18 to 24 who must take adult driver education, and for drivers 25 or older. Print the certificate: it is valid for 90 days, and you cannot take the driving test without it.
Where the ITTD and ITAD rules come from
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) sets these rules on its Impact Texas Drivers program page, its third-party skills testing page and its moving to Texas page. The DPS teen provisional license and how-to-apply pages, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) parent-taught pages and the Texas Driver Handbook add details. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Texas Department of Public Safety (dps.texas.gov) before you drive.
ITTD or ITAD: which video do you need?
| Who you are | Video | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Aged 15 to 17, taking an approved parent-taught or minor driver education course | Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) | 2 hours |
| Aged 18 to 24, required to take an adult driver education course | Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) | 1 hour |
| Aged 25 or older | Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) | 1 hour |
What is the Impact Texas Drivers program?
The Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) program teaches drivers about the risks and consequences of distracted driving, with real-life stories about its effects. ITTD is the teen version and ITAD is the adult version.
Every applicant who takes the driving exam completes the ITD course for their age group first. ITD does not replace the distracted driving lesson in the 24-hour teen driver education course or the 6-hour adult course: you need both. The practice question on what Texas law allows you to do with a text message while driving covers the same topic.
How to get your ITTD or ITAD certificate
- 1Choose the right program
Pick ITTD or ITAD by your age and your driver education requirements. The table above shows which one fits you.
- 2Finish your behind-the-wheel driver education first
Complete ITD after your behind-the-wheel driver education requirements and before the driving skills test.
- 3Complete the video online
The teen video takes 2 hours and the adult video takes 1 hour.
- 4Print your certificate of completion
It is valid for 90 days.
- 5Bring the certificate to your driving test
Take it to your driving skills test appointment. You cannot take the test without it.
When can you take ITTD?
Take ITTD near the end: after your behind-the-wheel driver education and within 90 days before your driving test. To get a provisional license, you must also be 16 or 17 and have held your learner license for at least 6 months. The question on when a learner meets the Phase One time rule shows how that holding period is counted.
In the TDLR parent-taught program, ITTD is step 9, after the remaining classroom and in-car training. At the next DPS appointment, the student brings the ITTD certificate with the Driver License Certificate of Completion.
How long is the ITTD or ITAD certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for 90 days. At a DPS driver license office and at a driver education school, it must be dated within 90 days before your driving test. A teen who tests at a DPS office must show an unexpired ITTD certificate. Count back 90 days from your test date and watch the video inside that window. The Texas driving test guide explains what else to bring.
Do you need ITTD or ITAD at a third-party testing school too?
| Where you take the driving test | Certificate | What else to bring |
|---|---|---|
| DPS driver license office | The ITD certificate for your age, dated within 90 days (teens: an unexpired ITTD certificate) | A Class C Road Skills Test appointment booked online, and proof of current registration and insurance for the test vehicle |
| Driver education school (third-party skills testing), age 16 or older in a minors course | ITTD certificate dated within 90 days before the drive test | A valid DE-964/DEE-964 and a learner license held at least 6 months |
| Driver education school, ages 18 to 24 | ITAD certificate dated within 90 days before the drive test | A valid DE-964/DEE-964 or ADE-1317/ADEE-1317, and a valid restricted driver license |
| Driver education school, age 25 or older | ITAD certificate dated within 90 days before the drive test | A valid restricted driver license |

ITTD and ITAD: common questions
Is the ITTD video free?
Yes. TDLR describes the Impact Texas Teen Driver Program as a free, two-hour informational video about the dangers of distracted driving. If you take your road test at a driver education school, ask the school what it charges for the drive test before you book. DPS does not regulate those fees.
My road test is months away. When should I watch the video?
Book first, then watch. You can schedule a DPS road test through Texas Scheduler up to 180 days ahead, but your ITD certificate must be dated within 90 days before the test. Watch the video after you finish your behind-the-wheel driver education and inside the last 90 days before your test date.
Do I have to print the ITTD or ITAD certificate?
Yes. Print your certificate of completion and take it to your driving skills test appointment. You cannot take the test without it, at a DPS office or at a driver education school. At a DPS office, also bring a vehicle with valid registration and insurance for the road test.
Do I need ITAD if I am 25 or older?
Yes, if you take the driving test. ITAD, the 1-hour adult video, is required for drivers 25 or older, even though Texas has no driver education requirement at that age. At a third-party testing school, you also need a valid restricted driver license and an ITAD certificate dated within 90 days before the drive test.
Can I take ITTD before I finish behind-the-wheel training?
No. Complete ITD after your behind-the-wheel driver education requirements and before the driving skills test. For teens, behind-the-wheel driver education includes 7 hours of in-car observation and 7 hours of driving with the instructor, plus 30 hours of driving practice, at least 10 of them at night, with a licensed driver 21 or older in the vehicle at all times.
