Traffic Signals & Road MarkingsStandalone practice
You reach an intersection where the power is out and all the traffic lights are dark. How should you proceed?
A approaches an intersection with dark traffic signals and other approaching vehicles.
Correct answer: Treat it as a four-way stop: stop fully, then go in turn when it is safe
Why
When signals fail, drivers from each direction may think they have the right-of-way, which makes dark intersections dangerous. Stop at the stop line or before the crosswalk, and then the first vehicle to stop goes first, as at any four-way stop. If an officer is directing traffic, follow the officer instead.
