Passing target: 80% (20/25)
You are on a two-lane road behind a slow truck. The center markings are a solid yellow line on your side and a broken yellow line on the other side. The oncoming lane looks clear. What may you do?
Blue car A follows truck B. The yellow line next to A is solid; the line across it is broken. The opposite lane is empty.
Correct answer: Stay behind the truck until the solid line on your side ends and you can see the road is clear.
Why
Yellow center lines separate traffic that moves in opposite directions, and a solid yellow line on your side marks a no-passing zone. These zones are put on hills and curves where a driver cannot see far enough ahead, so a road can look clear when it is not. Section 304.271, RSMo, requires drivers to obey official traffic-control devices such as these markings, and section 304.016 lets you use the left side only when it is clearly visible and free of oncoming traffic for the whole pass.
