Passing target: 70% (14/20)
You drive in the right lane of a three-lane interstate. Ahead, a car with a flat tire is stopped on the right shoulder. It has no emergency lights, only its hazard flashers. What should you do?
A travels in the rightmost of three interstate lanes. B is stopped entirely on the right shoulder with a flat front tire and its amber hazard lamps flashing; it has no emergency light. The middle lane is clear.
Correct answer: Slow down and move to a lane that is not next to the shoulder, if you can do it safely.
Why
On parkways and controlled-access highways, the Move Over law covers every motor vehicle that is stopped on the shoulder or in a lane, not only emergency and hazard vehicles. People often stand next to a disabled car to change a tire or wait for help, only a few feet from fast traffic. If traffic next to you makes a lane change unsafe, slow down and pass with extra care.
