Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You drive down an entrance ramp into the acceleration lane of an expressway. Traffic in the right lane moves at about 65 mph. What should you do?
A enters an acceleration lane beside two expressway through lanes. B and C travel in the nearest through lane with a gap between them, and the card states their speed is about 65 mph.
Correct answer: Speed up toward the traffic speed, signal left, and merge into a safe gap
Why
An acceleration lane gives you room to reach the speed of expressway traffic before you merge. Stay to the right in that lane, watch the traffic, and speed up so that your speed is close to theirs. Signal left and move into a gap that is big enough to enter without making other drivers slow down. A merge at a much lower speed forces the traffic behind you to brake.
