A train has just gone through a railroad crossing. The gates start to rise, but the red lights still flash. What should you do?
A waits at a two-track railroad crossing after a train has passed. The red signal still flashes, and a detail shows that the gate is only beginning to rise.
Correct answer: Wait until the gates are fully up and the lights stop, then look both ways and cross.
Why
At a crossing with more than one track, a second train can come right after the first one. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3341) requires you to stop between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail when signals warn of a train. It also forbids you to drive through, around or under a gate that is closed or that is opening or closing. Go only after all the signals stop and you can see that no train is coming.
