Passing target: 83.3% (15/18)
You drive on a two-lane road with no median. Ahead, a school bus stops in the oncoming lane. Its red lights flash, and its stop arm is out. What must you do?
A approaches north while school bus B faces south in the opposite lane of an undivided road. B’s outer red warning lamps are illuminated and its STOP arm extends toward the center of the road.
Correct answer: Stop at least 10 feet before you reach the bus, and wait.
Why
Children often cross the road to or from the bus, so they can be in your lane even when the bus is on the other side. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3345(a)) requires drivers who meet or overtake the bus to stop at least 10 feet before it. A driver at an intersection where the bus has stopped must also stop. The only exception is a highway with separate roadways, such as a median barrier or grass median, when the bus is on the other roadway.
