You normally keep a 4-second following distance. You now enter a highway work zone where traffic is still moving. What following distance does the manual advise?
A follows B through a highway work zone marked by cones along the road edge. The scene is at night with both cars’ lights visible, and the card states that traffic is moving and A normally leaves a four-second gap.
Correct answer: About 8 seconds, which is double your usual following distance.
Why
Traffic in work zones can slow or stop without warning, and the most common crash there is a rear-end collision. Do not use cruise control in a work zone, and do not slow down to watch the work. Obey flaggers, whose directions override signals and signs.
