You drive on a four-lane highway. A concrete barrier separates your two lanes from the two lanes that go the other way. On the other side of the barrier, a school bus stops with its red lights flashing and its stop arm out. What must you do?
A travels north on a highway with two lanes in each direction and a continuous concrete median barrier. School bus B is stopped on the opposite roadway with its red warning lamps lit and STOP arm extended.
Correct answer: Slow down and go on with care; you need not stop for a bus on the other roadway.
Why
Pennsylvania treats a highway as divided when a barrier, guide rail or median of grass, trees, rocks or water separates the two directions. Painted lines or a center turn lane do not count, so on those roads traffic in both directions must stop. Drivers behind the bus on its own roadway must always stop at least 10 feet away.
