You are stopped behind a school bus. Its red lights stop flashing and its stop arm folds back, but a child is still walking across the road in front of your car. What should you do?
A is stopped behind school bus B. A child is walking across A’s lane ahead of the car, and the card states that B’s red lights are off and its stop arm is folded.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the child reaches a safe place, and then drive on with care.
Why
Children who get off a school bus may cross in front of it, and they may not look for traffic. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3345(a)) requires you to stay stopped until the flashing red lights are off. It also forbids you to start moving while children from the bus are still on their way to a place of safety. Look carefully around the bus before you move, because a small child can be hard to see.
