You follow a school bus at 35 mph. Its amber (yellow) lights start to flash. What should you do?
A follows B on a two-lane road at the stated speed of 35 mph. An enlarged rear-header view shows B’s amber warning lamps illuminated between two dark red lamps.
Correct answer: Slow down and get ready to stop, because the bus will soon stop for children.
Why
The amber lights give you time to slow down smoothly before children get on or off the bus. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3345(d)) requires the bus driver to turn on the amber lights 150 to 300 feet before the stop. Section 3345(b) requires drivers who meet or overtake the bus to go with caution and be ready to stop. When the red lights flash and the stop arm comes out, you must stop.
