You find an open parallel parking space on your right and stop beside the car parked in front of it. A car is coming up behind you. What should you do before you begin to back up?
A is stopped alongside parked car B, in front of an empty space at the right curb. Car C approaches from behind in the travel lane. No reversing path is shown.
Correct answer: Signal, then wait until the traffic behind you is clear before you shift to reverse.
Why
The driver behind you may not expect you to stop and back up, so a signal gives early warning. When the lane is clear, look to the rear in the direction you will move and back up slowly. Stop before your bumper touches the car behind the space, then adjust your position.
