You parallel park on a two-way street that has a curb. After you stop, you see that your right-side tires are about 22 inches from the curb. What should you do?
A is parallel to the right curb on a two-way street, with the card stating that its right tires are about 22 inches from the curb. A larger tire-to-curb detail shows those reference points; no legal maximum or corrected position is shown.
Correct answer: Park again closer, because your right wheels must be within 18 inches of the curb.
Why
A car parked far from the curb sticks out into the travel lane, where other drivers and bicyclists must swerve around it. South Carolina law (S.C. Code 56-5-2560) sets the limit at 18 inches from the right-hand curb, and the manual uses the same 18-inch limit for the edge of the pavement where there is no curb. Check the gap before you leave the car, and fix it if it is too wide.
