Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
You park facing downhill and turn your front wheels toward the curb. Your car has an automatic transmission. What else must you do before you walk away?
Correct answer: Set the parking brake, shift to park, turn off the engine, and take the key with you.
Why
On a hill, gravity pulls on the car all the time, so you need more than one safeguard. S.C. Code 56-5-2570 says that you must stop the engine, lock the ignition, remove the key and set the brake before you leave a car unattended. If your car has a manual transmission, leave it in first gear or reverse instead of park.
