The center lane of a five-lane street has a solid and a broken yellow line on each side, and left-turn arrows that point both ways. You want to turn left into a store driveway two blocks ahead. How should you use this lane?
A is in the inner through lane of a continuous five-lane road with a shared center turn lane. The store driveway is stated as two blocks ahead, outside the image.
Correct answer: Enter it shortly before the driveway, after you check that it is clear, and wait there for a gap.
Why
A shared center turn lane serves drivers who turn left from both directions, so it must stay open for short, direct turns. Signal, check ahead and behind, and enter just before your turn. If a driver from the other direction is already in the lane, do not enter if you would get in that driver's way; the first driver in the lane has the right-of-way.
