You drive in the left lane of a four-lane street. In the right lane, the car ahead of you stops at a marked crosswalk. You cannot see why it stopped. What should you do?
A approaches in the left lane of a four-lane street. B is stopped before a marked crosswalk in the right lane; no reason or pedestrian is revealed.
Correct answer: Slow down and stop as well, because a pedestrian may be crossing in front of that car.
Why
A stopped car can hide a pedestrian until the person steps into the next lane, and then there is no time to stop. On a multi-lane road, the manual advises stopping about 30 feet before a crosswalk, so that drivers in the other lanes can see the pedestrian. Go only when the crosswalk is clear.
